VALENTINE, Neb. – The Oregon men's golf team finished the first round of The Jackrabbit in a three-way tie for second place at the Prairie Club's par-72, 7,522-yard Dunes Golf Course on Saturday.
How It Happened: Led by a strong first round from sophomore Aaron Wise, the Ducks ended the first day of play at The Jackrabbit in a tie for second place with a 7-over 295. Michigan State leads the pack after carding a 2-over 290.
Wise finished the day tied with Michigan State's Gareth Lapin for the low score of the round. He looked consistent for most of the day, tallying five birdies to finish with a 3-under 69. Wise's round tied his lowest score to par this season, a 3-under 68 in the first round of last week's Husky Invitational.
Brandon McIver and Zach Foushee both finished at 3-over for their first rounds. McIver, seeing his first action of the season, opened the day with two early birdies and headed into the turn at even par, but a 3-over back nine led the Billings, Mont., native to finish in a tie for 15th with Foushee and eight others in the field heading into Sunday's second round.
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Bonner finished the day tied for 25th after a 4-over 76. Freshman Edwin Yi, who turned in a 7-over 79 on Saturday, will head into the second round of the tournament tied for 45th overall.
What It Means: After one day of play at the Prairie Club, the Ducks sit in a three-way tie for second place with South Florida and South Dakota State, and five strokes back from leader Michigan State. Oregon remained at or near the top of the leaderboard for much of the day, and the Ducks will look to put together another strong day Sunday to keep themselves in a position to finish strong in Monday's final round.
