EUGENE, Ore. — One day after its most complete performance of the season so far, the No. 11 Oregon baseball team endured a punchless 1-0 defeat in 14 innings to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at PK Park.
How It Happened: The Ducks (7-2) mustered only four hits, just one of which left the infield. The Gauchos, meanwhile, were no-hit into the eighth inning but worked eight walks and had eight batters hit by pitches, and finally plated a run in the 14th to win despite stranding 18 runners on base in the game.
UCSB had two on with one out in the 14th after a hit by pitch and a walk. A passed ball allowed both runners to move up, before Michael McAdoo put an inside-out swing on a pitch from UO sidearmer Cooper Stiles, dropping a single into right field for the only run of the game.
Oregon didn't put a runner in scoring position until the ninth, which Daniel Patzlaff led off with a long at-bat before working a walk. Carson Breshears pinch ran and moved up on a sacrifice bunt, but UCSB left-hander Kyle Nelson (2-0) retired A.J. Balta and Jakob Goldfarb.
In the 13th, Mark Karaviotis pinch hit with runners on the corners and two out, and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Austin Grebeck flew out to left field to end the threat, with the Ducks going on to lose in the 14th a day after winning 13-1.
“Play better: throw strikes, play catch and put the ball in play,” UO coach George Horton said. “Yesterday we did all three extremely well, and that's what the scoreboard indicated. Today we did one of them; we played catch. But we didn't throw strikes and we didn't put the ball in play. It was lucky we were in the game, really.”
KKKKKKKKKKKKrook: UO starter Matt Krook struck out a career-high 12 over six no-hit innings, but was pulled from the game due to his pitch count.
Krook walked two and hit four batters. The third inning was a microcosm of his outing as a whole — strikeout, hit batter, strikeout, walk, strikeout.
“I felt pretty good, had pretty good stuff today, was working,” Krook said. “Just threw way too many pitches. I've got to cut that down so I can get deeper in the game.”
Bullpen Bends, Finally Breaks: Relievers Kyle Robeniol, Stephen Nogosek, Jacob Bennett and Brac Warren kept the game scoreless through 13, before the Gauchos broke through against Stiles.
Robeniol allowed the first UCSB hit in the eighth but got through two innings unscathed, and Nogosek also went two, stranding runners in scoring position in both frames. Bennett left with two on and two out in the 12th, his second inning of work, and Warren got a strikeout to end the threat before stranding two more Gauchos in the 13th.
Notable: Oregon's weekend starters have now allowed just three earned runs in 36 combined innings at home this season, with 47 strikeouts. … Freshman shortstop Travis Moniot broke an 0-for-20 stretch with an infield single in the 13th inning. … Grebeck recorded two outfield assists to give him seven in his career, tied for second in the UO record book.
On Deck: The Ducks and Gauchos close out the series Sunday at noon, with UO left-hander David Peterson (1-0, 0.69) slated to face right-hander Joe Record (1-0, 1.38).
