Ducks finish fourth at Gator Invite
03/06/16 | Women's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Oregon women's golf team fell back one spot after Sunday's final round, placing fourth at the 13-team SunTrust Gator Women's Invite at Mark Bostick Golf Course. The Ducks posted a final team score of 37-over 877, 15 strokes off the pace of host Florida, who took home the crown.
HOW IT HAPPENED: UO shot 17-over 297 for the third and final round on the 6,002-yard, par 70 track. Cathleen Santoso (73-76-73-222) fired the Ducks' low round of the day, carding a 3-over 73. The junior from Sydney, Australia used a birdie on her final hole - the par 5 No. 3 hole - to tie teammate Caroline Inglis (74-74-74-222) for 21st among individuals.
Freshman Kathleen Scavo (71-73-75-219) had Oregon's top overall finish, tying for 14th, followed by fellow frosh Petra Salko (73-72-75-220), who tied for 16th.
Marcella Pranovia (74-70-80-224) couldn't sustain momentum from her team-best, even-par 70 in Round 2 and placed tied for 28th. Pranovia was just 2-over at the turn on Sunday, but ran into trouble with a stretch of four holes that cost her six strokes against par.
WHAT IT MEANS: The Ducks posted a top four finish for the third time in as many spring tournaments, and Oregon was the only team in the field that saw all five of its golfers place among the top 30 individuals. Emphasizing the difficulty of the course, North Carolina State's Rachael Taylor took home medalist honors with a 54-hole score of even par.
QUOTABLE: Head coach Ria Scott - “This tournament taught us a lot of things. Despite our scores in the end, it was still a very successful trip. We beat a top-10 team (No. 9 Kent State), and definitely feel more prepared for potential playing conditions in the postseason.
“It really reiterated the lesson to our players of staying in it until the very last shot. You just never know what a good score is - and that's why you do your very best on every single shot.
“We want to acknowledge our freshmen for their solid play on the toughest course they've seen to date in college golf.”
Kathleen Scavo - "The team continues to show great momentum following our win in Arizona. This tournament was a true test of patience and mental toughness. Of course, our goal is to win every tournament, but we had some solid rounds and we are in a great position to make a run at the national championship later this spring."
UP NEXT: The Ducks will have a two-week break before resuming play at the Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., on March 21 for the San Diego State March Mayhem Invitational.
