EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon rallied from an eight-run deficit and had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth but dropped an 11-10 decision to Oregon State in a nonconference game Monday before 2,902 in PK Park.
How It Happened: The Beavers used a six-run third inning to chase UO starter Kyle Robeniol, on the way to an 8-0 lead after the top of the fourth. Oregon (17-13) used a two-run Steven Packard homer in the fourth and then a six-run sixth to tie the game, before OSU (24-9) rallied again with three in the ninth.
Trailing 11-8 entering the bottom of the ninth, Oregon had two on and two out for Nick Catalano. He lofted a flyball into short left field, and it fell in as OSU's shortstop and left fielder couldn't get on the same page. That made it 11-10 and put Catalano on second base for Packard, but he popped out to end the game.
“We played awful in the first few innings, and they capitalized on everything we gave them,” UO coach George Horton said. “… But the fact my guys got off the deck and had a chance to win, ultimately I'm proud of my guys.”
Few saw such drama coming when the Ducks trailed 8-0 early on. But Tim Susnara sparked Oregon's rally in the bottom of the sixth with a double, moved to third on a single by Daniel Patzlaff and scored on a base hit by Phil Craig-St. Louis. Travis Moniot then popped a flyball into right that carried over the fence for a three-run homer, and the Ducks later added on with an RBI single by Packard and a bases-loaded walk to Patzlaff that tied the score, 8-8.
The sixth-inning rally came in the midst of a heady performance by freshman Cole Stringer, who threw three scoreless innings of relief. Cooper Stiles (1-2) continued the solid effort by the bullpen in the eighth, but he took the loss after allowing two of OSU's three runs in the ninth.
Stringer's Strong Impression: Stringer, a freshman left-hander from Portland, came into Monday having completed just one inning of work in two appearances this season. He faced one over the minimum in three innings against the Beavers, working around two hits while striking out two.
Horton said the performance earned Stringer a spot on the travel squad for the road trip to Los Angeles later this week.
“When he got in there, first ball out of his hand it was, 'whoa,'” Horton said, noting that Stringer typically works around 85-86 mph but hit 88 on Monday. “That was one of the real bright spots. That's how you change coach's mind.”
Notable: Moniot has homered in three of the last four games. He's 9-for-17 in five games since making an adjustment to his stance, raising his average from .133 to .200. … Craig-St. Louis pinch hit for starting catcher Slade Heggen in the fourth and remained in the game at first, with Susnara moving from first to catcher. Craig-St. Louis' two hits were his first in exactly a month, going back to March 18. … Oregon failed to score in the first inning for the first time in eight games. … Austin Grebeck saw his nine-game hitting streak end.
Up Next: The Ducks begin a three-game series at UCLA on Thursday (7 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
