First-Place Cal Wins Series Opener Over Oregon At PK Park

EUGENE, Ore. — First-place California banged out a PK Park-record 21 hits to beat the Oregon baseball team 12-2 on Friday before 2,200 fans.

How It Happened: The No. 9 Golden Bears (19-7, 8-2 Pac-12) got to UO pitching early and often, scoring five runs in the top of the first off Ducks ace Cole Irvin (2-3).

Oregon responded in the bottom of the inning when the first four batters reached, pushing two run across on a single by Jake Bennett. But the Ducks (12-12, 2-5) didn't mount another rally the rest of the night.

“Make no mistake about it, we got dominated,” UO coach George Horton said.

Irvin was chased after facing two batters in the sixth, allowing 10 runs — nine earned — on 15 hits in five complete innings. Relievers Isaiah Carranza and Parker Kelly allowed a run each.

“I didn't think I called a good game, and we didn't execute pitches as well as we should have,” Horton said.

Peterson Good To Go: Sunday starter David Peterson is set to return to the rotation this weekend after getting through a bullpen session Friday without incident.

Peterson last pitched March 20. He missed his next scheduled start due to illness, then didn't travel with the team last week due to injury, though the Ducks' game Sunday at Michigan State was cancelled due to weather.

Peterson will help the Ducks try to salvage the series after Friday's loss.

“We called this a big series, and we got thumped,” Horton said. “It's still a big series, and we've got two games left.”
