EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon's broad-based success on the field of competition is well known, with a top-10 finish in the Directors' Cup highlighting an incredible year for the Ducks.
However, Oregon's recent success in the classroom also has the University ranked among the top institutions in the nation, and second only to Stanford in the Pac-12.
This decade (2010-16), Oregon has produced 32 academic all-Americans. That total is second in the Pac-12 behind Stanford (63).
On a national level, the Ducks' total since 2010 is tied with Georgia for the seventh-best among NCAA Division I public institutions, and tied for 10th overall among all Division I universities.
"Academic all-American is the highest honor for any student-athlete, and it is quite an accomplishment for Oregon to be in the top 10 both athletically and academically," said athletic director Rob Mullens. "We are tremendously proud of our student-athletes who are successful in both the classroom and athletically."
Further illustrating the recent success in the classroom, the 32 academic all-Americans in the last seven years represent nearly a third of Oregon's overall tally of 101 academic all-Americans since that program started more than 50 years ago.
The recent dramatic rise in academic success can be directly correlated to John E. Jaqua Academic Center, which opened its doors in 2010.
"The Jaqua Center has had a tremendous impact on the academic success of our student-athletes," said Jaqua Center executive director Steve Stolp. "There are so many more services that we are able to offer now that we just couldn't in our old space.
"The student-athletes are excited to come to this building and learn."
It is not only the number of academic all-Americans that is on the rise. The retention rate is up among student-athletes and the Ducks are now averaging more than 100 conference all-academic honors annually.
The graduation rate among those student-athletes who complete their eligibility at Oregon has reached 90 percent.
"When you look at not just football, but the success of our teams from basketball to track to golf, and then you have the success we're seeing academically, it's really rewarding," said Stolp.
In the last seven years, the Ducks have risen from the bottom third of the Pac-12 in all-time academic all-Americans to currently rank fourth with 101 behind Stanford (204), UCLA (124) and Arizona State (117).
The top 10 Division I institutions producing academic All-Americans since 2010 are Alabama (65), Stanford (63), Nebraska (54), Navy (43), West Virginia and Notre Dame (38), Duke (37), North Dakota State (36), Florida State (33) and Oregon and Georgia (32).
Stanford (63), Oregon (32) and Arizona State (30) are the only Pac-12 schools to produce more than 20 academic all-Americans over the last seven years.
