Ducks finish fourth in East Lake Cup stroke play
10/30/17 | Men's Golf
ATLANTA – Oregon finished Monday's stroke play portion of the East Lake Cup at 25-over par and will be the fourth seed for Tuesday's match play semifinals.
How it Happened: Norman Xiong led the way for the Ducks in round one, shooting a 2-over par 74 to finish tied for sixth individually. After shooting a 4-over par 40 on the front nine, he bounced back with a birdie on the 11th hole and an eagle on hole 15 and was just one shot off the lead with one hole to play.
Xiong ended up in the rough off the tee on the par five 18th and was forced to lay-up, ending his day with a bogey and finishing two shots behind individual champion Will Gordon of Vanderbilt.
Donald Kay finished with 6-over par 78 and Thomas Mulligan shot an 8-over par 80 as both got their first taste of collegiate golf on the big stage. Ryan Gronlund shot a 9-over par 81 and Edwin Yi finished with a 10-over par 82 to round out the scoring for the Ducks.
What it Means: The Ducks will be the fourth seed following stroke play in the East Lake Cup for the second consecutive year. Last year, Oregon defeated number one seed Vanderbilt 3-2 to advance to the match play final.
Quotable: Casey Martin, Head Coach
"It was a humbling day. The golf course was really hard and we didn't play well and didn't handle it great. That's a little frustrating but we made match play and we are going to give it everything we've got tomorrow and hopefully have a little more mojo."
