Ducks Tied for Sixth Heading into Final Round of Regionals
05/15/18 | Men's Golf
STOCKTON, Calif. – Oregon shot 5-under par in the second round of the Stockton Regional Tuesday at The Reserve at Spanos Park to sit in a tie for sixth place heading into the final round. Sophomore Norman Xiong delivered another solid performance, shooting a bogey-free 67 to move into second place individually at 9 under for the tournament.
How it Happened: Xiong started his day off with four consecutive pars, but birdied holes 14 and 15 to shoot a 2-under 34 on the back nine. He made birdies at holes one and three before a birdie at the par-5 sixth hole got him to 5 under on the day.
A trio of Ducks played even par for the round to back up Xiong's 67. Edwin Yi got off to a blazing start, going 4 under through seven holes after birdies at 11 and 14 and an eagle at 16. Back-to-back double bogeys at 17 and 18 derailed his solid round and dropped him back to even before he made nine pars on the front nine to shoot a 72.
Kevin Geniza birdied holes 11 and 12 to get to 2 under but double bogeyed 17 to fall back to level par. He bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 18th and made eight pars and a bogey on the front nine. Donald Kay went 1 under through three holes, but bogeyed the 13th and made double bogey on the 14th to drop to 2 over. A pair of birdies on holes four and six along with seven pars got him back to even for the day.

On what the team needs to do tomorrow in order to advance…
"We are close but we let a great round get away today. Our backs are against the wall and we need to play our best round of the year tomorrow."
What it Means: The Ducks will have some ground to make up in Wednesday's final round as they're three shots behind fifth-place TCU and tied with Colorado. The top five teams in each regional qualify for the NCAA Championships. Xiong will still have a chance to secure a spot in the championships as an individual if the team does not qualify.
