After a phenomenal first two rounds of the San Francisco NCAA Regional, the Oregon women’s golf team’s season ended on Wednesday
SAN FRANCISCO – After defying expectations during the first two rounds of the San Francisco NCAA Regional, the Oregon women's golf team's season ended after round three at TPC Harding Park on Wednesday.
How it Happened: Oregon entered the day in fourth place, as the region's No. 14 seed, but struggled to break par all day, with the exception of just two holes collectively. This dropped the team down 10 places in the standings to finish the regional in 14th place.
Stanford finished first in the field, shooting 8 under, and advanced to the NCAA Championships along with UCLA, Ole Miss, Louisville, Kent State and Colorado.
Kathleen Scavo led the Ducks in round three of the regional. The junior carded one birdie on the back nine to finish the round at 4 over. Scavo's third-round performance put her at 1 over for the three-day event and tied for 22nd on the individual leaderboard. Patty Tavatanakit of UCLA claimed the individual title with an 8-under 208.
Sophomore Amy Matsuoka and freshman Alexis Phadungmartvorakul both shot a 1 over on the front nine, but had trouble on the back nine to finish at 5 over for the round. Matsuoka finished the regional at 6 over overall while Phadungmartvorakul finished at 10 over overall.
After an incredible day on the course in round two, junior Petra Salko was hurt in the third round by a pair of double bogeys on the back nine. Salko finished the day at 6 over to complete the tournament at 5 over.
Freshman Madi Daniel's third-round performance was highlighted by an eagle on the 10th hole. Daniel finished the day at 6 over and 18 over for the regional.
What it Means: The Ducks were able to be competitive in the first two rounds of an NCAA Regional with an underclassmen-heavy roster. Having freshmen and sophomores play in intense situations like this will help them become better competitors in postseason play during the years to come.
