Ducks Go Low, Lead Stanford Intercollegiate
10/12/19 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – No. 16 Oregon holds the 36-hole lead against an elite field at the Stanford Intercollegiate after shooting 6 under in round two Saturday at Stanford Golf Course. The Ducks hold a three-shot lead over No. 8 Arizona State and are six shots clear of No. 10 Stanford and No. 11 Arizona.
Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen went low to lead the way for the Ducks, shooting a 5-under 66 to move into fifth place. Tze-Han Lin is tied for third and two shots off the lead while Alexis Phadungmartvorakul is tied for sixth to make it a trio of Ducks in the top 10.
How it Happened: Nielsen bogeyed the opening hole, but bounced right back with birdies at three of her next four holes to get to 2 under on the day. She followed with an eagle at the par-5 seventh hole and made the turn at 4 under. The freshman bogeyed the tough par-4 10th hole but made birdies at 14 and 18 while staying bogey free over the final eight holes to shoot 1 under on the back nine.
Phadungmartvorakul went out in a bogey-free 3-under 32 and held a share of the lead at one point after making three straight birdies on holes five through seven. She made eight consecutive pars to start the back nine but stumbled with a bogey on the par-4 18th.
Lin continues to lead the Ducks for the week overall after shooting a 2-under 69 to remain in a tie for second. She went out in even-par 35, making two bogeys along with birdies at holes three and four before shooting a bogey-free 2-under 34 on the back.
Quotable – head coach Derek Radley:
"I am so proud of this team and the confidence they are developing in themselves and each other. Our main focus before this tournament was to improve our speed putting and it has paid off. The ability to go low is a trait we strive for and today was so much fun to watch. (Assistant) coach Monica Vaughn and I look forward to a strong finish tomorrow."
