03/12/19 | Women's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. - The Oregon women's golf team posted its third straight top-5 finish with a second-place showing at The Wildcat Invitational at Sewailo Golf Club.
First-year head coach Derek Radley, who was an assistant with Arizona's national championship team last year, went into Tucson and topped his former squad. Arizona State won The Wildcat at 22-over, with the Ducks in second at 29-over and host Arizona in third at 30-over. Oregon State (+39) and Purdue (+46), both teams ahead of the Ducks in the national rankings, took seventh and ninth, respectively.
The Ducks were led by Petra Salko for a second straight tournament. The senior, who took second at the Bruin Wave Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif., tied for fourth at The Wildcat. Salko was 3-over at the tournament (70-74-75, 219). She tallied four birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey in her final round on Tuesday. Salko has been consistently strong to open her senior season with just one round over 77. Her opening round 70 in Tucson is her best of the spring.
Amy Matsuoka had a big third round to climb up seven spots to 11th. The junior shot a 7-over (74-76-73, 223). She had three birdies on the front nine and finished her third and final round at 1-over 73.
Kathleen Scavo also climbed up the leaderboard in Tuesday's final round. The senior tied for 18th, up six spots from where she started the day. Scavo shot a 10-over (74-78-74, 226) at the tournament and was 2-over in her final round.
As a team, the Ducks were in fourth place after two rounds and the biggest reason for UO's jump to second was a strong third round from Alexis Phadungmartvorakul. After two tough rounds on Monday, the sophomore from Taft, Calif., was even par in her third round to jump 25 spots on the leaderboard for a tie at 55th. She ended the tournament at 19-over (82-81-72, 235). The final round 72 is her best of the spring thus far.
Freshman Tze-Han Lin tied for 39th at The Wildcat. After posting an opening round 73, Lin posted an 80 in her second round and a 78 in her third round for a 15-over 231.
The Ducks are halfway through the spring regular season, with just the Ping/Arizona State Invitational (March 29-31), the Silverado Showdown in Napa (April 7-9) and the Pac-12 Championships (April 15-17) left before NCAA play begins in May.
