Ducks Down Pacific in Regular Season Finale
04/13/19 | Women's Beach Volleyball
DAVIS, Calif. – The Oregon beach volleyball team wrapped its regular season schedule on Saturday with a 4-1 win over Pacific, reaching the four-win mark for the first time in program history.
Â
The Ducks (4-9-1) finished a 1-1-1 weekend in Davis, Calif., falling to UC Davis, 3-2, in the first of two matches on Friday before finishing the second match in a 2-2 tie.
Â
Oregon's top pair of Brooke Nuneviller and Lindsey Vander Weide went 3-0 on the weekend, improving to 10-4 this season and setting the UO single-season and career records for wins by a pair. The duo has won six straight matches, breaking another UO record. Vander Weide is Oregon's all-time individual wins leader with 19 in her career.
Â
How it Happened: The Ducks won on four of five courts against Pacific to lock up their fourth victory, including a pair of three-set wins. Nuneviller and Vander Weide rolled to a 21-15, 21-14 win at the top court, and the freshman duo of Elise Ferreira and Carly Wallace dominated at the No. 5 court, 25-14, 25-14.
Â
But it was the two three-set victories that made the difference in Oregon closing its regular season on a high note. Seniors August Raskie and Maddy Silberger-Franek, playing together for the third time this season, pulled out a 21-7, 15-21, 15-6 win on the second court, and the pair of Josie Cole and Ally Haden secured a 21-9, 19-21, 15-10 win at No. 4. Pacific outlasted Lauren Page and Emily Mattoon in a thrilling match on No. 3, 20-22, 21-13, 17-15, to put a point on the board.
Â
The Ducks played well in their first match against UC Davis on Friday, but fell just short of the win. Nuneviller and Vander Weide dominated at No. 1 and Raskie and Silberger-Franek rolled to a win on court two, but UC Davis won on straight sets on courts four and five. The match hung on court three, where Page and Mattoon fell just short in a three-set battle, 20-22, 21-15, 15-9.
Â
Some tough circumstances prevented Oregon from a win in the second match on Friday, which ended in a 2-2 tie. Raskie and Silberger-Franek won the first set on No. 2, 21-16, and trailed 16-13 in the second set when an injury halted play, and the officials ultimately suspended the No. 2 match with no team point awarded. The Ducks won on courts one and four, but UC Davis pulled out victories on three and five to finish the match in a tie.
Â
Up Next: The Ducks will head to Tucson, Ariz., on April 25 to compete at the Pac-12 Championship.
