SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon women's lacrosse senior attacker Shannon Williams has been named the 2019 Pac-12 Scholar of the Year, announced by the conference office Wednesday morning.
"I am extremely honored to be named the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year," said Williams. "I cannot thank my teammates, coaches, trainers, academic support staff and family enough for their love and encouragement. I came to Oregon to receive a top education and pursue my dreams of playing lacrosse at the highest level. The Oregon lacrosse family has made both possible, and I could not be more grateful for my time at this university over the last four years."
Williams will graduate from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in June with a double major in human physiology and biology. She will also finish with a minor in chemistry and currently sports a 3.95 cumulative grade-point average (GPA).
"I'm really proud of Shannon for all she has achieved on and off the field for this program," head coach Chelsea Gamble said. "She truly exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete."
As a senior captain, Williams leads the team with 62 points on 35 goals and 27 assists, marking her third consecutive season with at least 60 points. Over the first month of the season, Williams was the only player in the nation with five or more points in each of her first six games, totaling 32 points over that span. Heading into this week's Pac-12 Tournament, she ranks second in the league in assists and third in points.
Williams became Oregon's all-time leader in both points (251) and goals (157), and is currently third in assists (94). She also holds the career records for points per game (3.69) and goals per game (2.31) and set the single-season records for points in 2018 (74) and points per game in 2017 (4.24).
Over her career, in which she has started all 68 games played, Williams has a goal in 60 contests and at least one point in 64 games. Her program-leading 251 career goals have been fueled by 29 hat tricks and a streak of 20 consecutive games with a goal.
The Bel Air, Maryland, native earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors in 2018 after the conference's inaugural season and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District second-team selection and MPSF All-Academic honoree in 2017.
Williams has participated in Oregon's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving as co-director during the 2018 winter term, and is an active member in the O-Heroes mentor program.
