Ducks Drop Opener to Fresno

04/04/19 | Baseball

EUGENE, Ore. – Fresno State broke open a tight game with eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to hand Oregon a 14-2 nonconference loss at PK Park on Thursday night.

How it Happened: The Ducks (16-11) led 2-1 heading into the sixth inning, but Fresno State (14-9) took advantage of five walks and two errors in the decisive inning to score eight unearned runs.

Oregon starter Tyler Frazier (0-1) pitched into the sixth before being relieved with one out and runners on first and second. The Ducks' freshman right-hander walked the leadoff batter JT Arruda in the inning, before getting a lazy fly ball to left field that Taylor Adams dropped. After a fly out and a fielder's choice, Ducks' relievers walked the next two hitters before allowing an infield hit giving Fresno State a 3-2 lead.

A walk and an error scored two more runs to make it 6-2 before three RBI base hits gave the Bulldogs a 9-2 lead. FS added three more runs in the seventh and two in the ninth.

The teams each scored runs in the first inning. Fresno State loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the inning but Frazier battled out of the inning allowing just one run.

The Ducks rallied to tie the game in their half of the inning. Tanner Smith lined an RBI double to deep right-center field scoring Sam Novitske who walked to lead off the inning.

Max Foxcroft gave Oregon a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Ducks' freshman delivered a two-out RBI single scoring Cameron Campbell.

Box Score Notes: Frazier allowed just one earned run in 5.1 innings pitched while fanning five … In Frazier's two starters, he has allowed just two earned runs in 10 innings with 10 Ks … Smith batted in the two-hole for the first time this season … Foxcroft, Smith and Spencer Steer each finished with one hit.

On Deck: Game two of the series is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday at PK Park. Robert Ahlstrom (4-3, 3.82) will pitch for Oregon while Ryan Jensen (3-1, 3.97) will take the mound from Fresno State.
