Bats Power Civil War Win
04/09/19 | Baseball
How it Happened: Sam Novitske put the Ducks in front for good with a two-out RBI single, scoring Cameron Campbell, who worked a two-out walk after falling behind 0-2 in the count. Tanner Smith followed with a two-run infield single to make it 11-8 before Spencer Steer capped off the scoring with a single to left center, driving in Smith.
The Ducks (19-12) got off to a roaring start, scoring five runs on five hits in the first inning. Smith reached with a one-out double, moved to third on a Steer single and came in to score on a Gabe Matthews RBI fielder's choice. Jonny DeLuca followed with a run-scoring single to score Steer before Aaron Zavala drove in two with a two-out double to the left-field corner. One batter later, Campbell scored Zavala with an RBI single to right field.
Oregon State (23-7-1) scored two runs in the bottom of the first, but Oregon got three in the fourth to extend its lead to 8-2. Matthews led off the frame with a single, then came in to score on Zavala's second double of the game. Campbell delivered his second RBI single of the day before Max Foxcroft plated Zavala with a sacrifice fly.
The Beavers answered by scoring the next six runs to tie the game at eight after seven innings. Nico Tellache came in with a runner on first in the seventh inning and struck out both batters he faced, including Beavers' All-American catcher Adley Rutschman, to end the threat and keep the game tied.
Quotable: Head coach George Horton
On the win…
"It's very difficult to win here. (The way we won) isn't really how you draw it up, but nonetheless, scoring seven runs with two outs and getting that four-run, two-out rally is what it takes to be successful here."
