Ducks bounce back with win at USC
05/18/19 | Baseball
Los Angeles – Jakob Goldfarb and Spencer Steer drove in three runs apiece and Ryne Nelson came in to get the save in Oregon's 10-7 Pac-12 Conference win over USC at Dedeaux Field on Saturday.
How it Happened: Oregon put four runs on the board in the top of the first inning on just one hit. The first two batters, Sam Novitske and Tanner Smith, both walked before Steer put the Ducks on the board with an RBI single.
Gabe Matthews plated Smith with a sacrifice fly and then Steer scored from first on an error by Trojans' first baseman Clay Owens on a Jonny DeLuca hard hit ball down the first-base line. DeLuca scored the fourth run on an attempted double steal where Goldfarb was retired in a rundown.
USC got one back in the bottom of the first on an error on Goldfarb on a play where he touched a pitch thrown by starter Cullen Kafka that he used his mask to retrieve. The umpires awarded the runner at third home plate as a result.
Oregon answered with a run in the top of the second after loading the bases with one out. Kyle Froemke walked to lead off the second, moved to second on a Novitske hit and to third on a Smith walk. Steer got his second RBI of the day on a hit by a pitch.
The Trojans pulled within two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, but Oregon got them back with two in the top of the fourth.
Novitske reached on an infield hit and Smith drove him home with an RBI triple. Steer picked up his third RBI of the game with a ground out to the shortstop that scored Smith.
Blake Sabol hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth for USC to the lead to 7-4, but Goldfarb got that back and more with a three-run bomb over the right-center field wall in the top of the seventh. DeLuca, who singled, and Williams, who walked, both scored on Goldfarb's second homer of the season.
USC (22-27-1, 10-14-1 Pac-12) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Oregon (27-25, 10-16 Pac-12) turned to Nelson who retired all five hitters he faced, including a pair of strikeouts.
Box Score Notes: Oregon scored the 10 runs on just six hits, but the Ducks walked eight times … Nelson picked up his fifth save of the season … Brett Walker (2-1) got the win allowing just one run on two hits in three innings of relief of Kafka … Novitske extended his hitting streak to 11 games, one shy of cracking the top 10 all-time at Oregon … Novitske reached on a walk and two singles, marking the 48th game (out of 52) that the freshman leadoff hitter has reached base … It was his 18th multi-hit game of the season, second on the team to Steer's 21 … Goldfarb had his sixth multi-RBI game of the season.
Record Watch: Nelson's two strikeouts ran his season total to 100, the fourth most in Oregon history … He fanned one Trojan looking, his 30th of the season, tied with Alex Keudell (2012) and Tyler Anderson (2011) for the second most in a season … Nelson notched his eighth career save, tied with Madison Boer (2009-11) and Kellen Moen (2009-11) for eighth all time … Steer added to his career record for multi-RBI games with his 36th … It was his 15th multi-RBI game of the season moving him into a tie for second all-time with A.J.
