The Final Four run by women's basketball helped that program win several awards at this year's O Show, held Tuesday night.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Final Four run by Oregon women's basketball earlier this spring resulted in a plethora of honors for that program at the UO athletic department's annual O Show, held Tuesday at Venue 242 and hosted by ESPN personality Holly Rowe.
National player of the year Sabrina Ionescu was named Oregon's female athlete of the year in a vote of her peers, and the basketball program was named UO women's team of the year. Kelly Graves was named coach of the year, and Satou Sabally took home the Doyle Higdon Memorial Award as the athletic department's top sophomore for 2018-19.
Ionescu also joined volleyball star Ronika Stone to present a special award in recognition of Rowe, both for the platform she's helped provide for female athletics at ESPN, and her heroic battle with cancer.
Football quarterback Justin Herbert was named male athlete of the year, and the men's golf program was named men's team of the year. Herbert's teammate Calvin Throckmorton shared the Emerald Athletic Award as the top senior men's athlete with golfer Ryan Gronlund.
Shannon Williams from lacrosse won the Jackson Athletic Award as the top senior women's athlete. Both the Emerald and Jackson awards factor academics and leadership along with athletic success.
Brooke Nuneviller from the volleyball program was named freshman of the year. Hannah Blair of acrobatics and tumbling and Eric Edwards Jr. of track and field shared comeback player of the year honors.
Kevin Geniza from men's golf won the Herb Yamanaka Oregon Pride Award, and Emily Kastner was honored with the Witham O Heroes Award for her work with the St. Baldrick's fundraiser to battle childhood cancers.
The Jaqua Award winners for having the top four-year grade-point averages were Petra Salko of women's golf and Seth Berdahl of cross country and track and field. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's "Above & Beyond" awards went to strength and conditioning coach Mark Dillon (staff) and Peg Rees (faculty).
