CLE ELUM, Wash. - Senior Kathleen Scavo had a blistering first round to lead the Oregon women's golf team at NCAA Regionals on Monday at the Tumble Creek Club.
Scavo shot a 5-under 67, her best round of the season, and sits alone in second place. She previously shot a 68 in the third round of the PING/ASU Invitational in March. Scavo tallied six birdies and one bogey in her opening round of regionals, including a 4-under 32 on the front nine. After posting her first bogey of the day on No. 17, she rebounded with a birdie on No. 18 to end the round. Scavo came into the day averaging 2.4 birdies per round this year with an average round of 73.97.
"If I had to use one word to describe Kathleen's round today, I'd say fearless," said head coach Derek Radley. "She came out of the clubhouse ready to play today. With a ton of postseason experience, she played with zero fear and kept us in contention."
As a team, the Ducks shot a 7-over 295 in the opening round. UO is six strokes back of UCF and San Jose State (1-over 289), which are tied for fifth place. The top six teams in each regional move on to the NCAA Championships.
Junior Amy Matsuoka had a solid day for the Ducks, shooting a 2-over 74. She birdied No. 3 before posting three bogeys later in the round.
Freshman Tze-Han Lin had a double birdie on No. 14 and shot a 5-over 77. Senior Petra Salko also tallied a 5-over 77 with five bogeys on the day.
Sophomore Alexis Phadungmartvorakul shot a 9-over 81 with two birdies, seven bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.
The second of three rounds begins tomorrow with a final round on Wednesday.
