DUCKS CAP HISTORIC SEASON WITH FIRST EVER WIN AT PAC-12s
Oregon accomplished a number of program firsts in the 2019 season, capping off the season with its first ever win in a Pac-12 Championship match. The Ducks won a school-record five matches, finishing 5-11-1, highlighted by a 3-1 win over Utah in the opening round of the Pac-12 Championship. The duos of Brooke Nuneviller and Lindsey Vander Weide, Josie Cole and Ally Haden and Elise Ferreira and Carly Wallace each earned wins to give Oregon a 3-1 victory over Utah to move on to take on No. 1 UCLA in round two. The Ducks fell to both UCLA and Stanford, 3-0, and were eliminated from the tournament, but showed that the young program is on the rise. The Ducks also picked up wins throughout the year over Portland (twice), Concordia and Pacific, winning three of their last six matches of the regular season and earning a tie in another.
A PROGRAM ON THE RISE
Entering just its seventh year of existence, Oregon's beach program has made some leaps over the past few years towards building a potential perennial contender in the highly-competitive Pac-12. Prior to last year, the Ducks had not won more than three dual matches in a year, but won five in 2019 to surpass the win total from the previous two seasons combined. Oregon also hired Janice Harrer prior to the 2019 season as associate head coach for beach volleyball, becoming the program's first-ever beach-only coach. The Ducks have also seen an influx of beach-only players become key contributors to the program's success in recent years. The 2020 roster currently has eight players that are solely beach volleyball players and are not on the indoor roster. That group is led by returnees from last year's team, Josie Cole, Ally Haden and Carly Wallace, all of whom were part of a duo that won their individual match in last year's win over Utah in the opening round of the Pac-12 Championship. Oregon also hosted its first-ever home match last season in a 4-1 win over Portland on April 6, and wil again host the Pilots this season on April 14 at Amazon Park.
HISTORIC YEAR FOR NUNEVILLER
Paired with senior Lindsey Vander Weide, sophomore Brooke Nuneviller set a program single-season record with 11 wins in 2019. The duo held down the No. 1 spot for the entire season, going 11-6 highlighted by victories over duos from No. 12 Stanford and No. 14 Arizona to open the season. The pair also won their final six matches of the regular season before helping the Ducks to a win over Utah by taking their match in three sets, 21-17, 15-21, 15-10.
