Ducks in a Battle for Second After 36 Holes

TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 15 ranked Oregon women's golf team is in a fight to take second place for the second year in a row at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational after a solid 36-hole first day on Monday at the Sewailo Golf Club.

The Ducks sit in third at 6 over through the first two rounds, one stroke behind New Mexico State for second place and seven strokes ahead of Fresno State for fourth. No. 10 ranked Arizona – the tournament's host school –  has distanced itself from the field after shooting a combined 18 under across 36 holes.

Oregon has four players in the top 25 on the individual leaderboard led by senior Amy Matsuoka, who is 1 under and in a tie for eighth place.

How it Happened: Matsuoka paced the Ducks to a 5-over 293 in the opening round, firing a steady 1-under 71. The Newport Beach, Calif., native carded just one bogey on the round while making two birdies and 15 pars.

Freshmen Briana Chacon and Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen both shot 1 over to finish the first round two strokes behind Matsuoka, and junior Alexis Phadungmartvorakul rounded out the counting scores with a 4-over 76.

Oregon improved by four strokes in the second round with a 1-over 289 behind a solid outing from up and down the lineup. Matsuoka, Nielsen and sophomore Tze-Han (Heather) Lin all shot even par, and Phadungmarvorakul was one stroke behind with a 73 while notching six birdies. Chacon finished her day with a 4-over 76.

Freshman Ching-Tzu Chen – competing as an individual this week – shot 79 in the first round and 78 in the second to wrap the day at 13 over.
