Ducks In Second After Lin's Stellar Round
10/16/21 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Tze-Han (Heather) Lin put together the best round of her career on Saturday to help the Oregon women's golf team move into second place entering the final round of the Stanford Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course.
Lin rattled off seven birdies to card a career-best 6-under 65, pacing the No. 5 ranked Ducks to a 5-under 279 in the second round. Oregon sits in second in the 18-team field at 1-under par overall, with No. 1 ranked Stanford leading at 21-under par on its home course.
The Ducks put together an impressive round despite being without head coach Derek Radley, who stayed in Eugene for the birth of his third child on Friday with his wife, Sara. Assistant coach Monica Vaughn is leading the team this weekend in Stanford.
"I was extremely proud of the way our team played today and their energy was so contagious," Vaughn said. "They fought for every shot until the last putt went in the hole. The girls felt confident knowing they would have more birdie opportunities in the warmer afternoon weather, and they really capitalized.
"They gain more and more confidence with every strong round and are really starting to feel comfortable at the top of the leaderboard. They deserve to be there, and I know tomorrow they will go out and play fearless with their heads held high."
How it Happened: Lin was locked in from the get-go on Saturday, making three birdies in her first six holes to quickly get to 3 under. She made a bogey at No. 7, but that would be the only blemish on her scorecard. A birdie at No. 9 got her back to 3 under, and she added three more birdies on a bogey-free back nine to close the day with a 65, tied for the best round by an individual this weekend.
Lin's overall score of 65 is tied for third-best in UO single-round history, and she joins teammate Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu as the second Duck to shoot a 65 this fall. Her stellar showing launched her 29 spots up the individual leaderboard into a tie for fourth place at 4-under par overall. Stanford's Rose Zhang leads the field at 12 under.
"Heather was a true senior today," Vaughn said, "and her expert knowledge of this course was monumental to our team performance. She played smart and knew all the correct places to be in the fairways and around the greens in order to give herself birdie chances. Her positive attitude was infectious to us all and she did an amazing job leading her team today."
Lu and Ching-Tzu Chen also enjoyed strong rounds, each shooting an even-par 71. Lu was steady all day long with 14 pars, and Chen bounced back from a 3 over showing on the front nine to shoot 3 under with four birdies on the back nine.
Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen finished just one shot back of Lu and Chen with a 1-over 72 to round out Oregon's counting scores, and Briana Chacon finished with a 4-over 75.
