10/29/21 | Cross Country
EUGENE, Ore. – On the strength of his work in the classroom, UO graduate student Matt Wisner has been named the 2021 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The honor was announced Friday morning ahead of the Pac-12 Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah.
With a 3.84 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in the UO School of Journalism and Communications, Wisner was also a member of the 2021 Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll.
Wisner joins Galen Rupp (2008) and Sam Prakel (2017) as the third UO man to win conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades. Collectively, the program has been recognized six times to go along with the three UO women—Nicole Blood (2009), Alex Kosinski (2010), Jordan Hasay (2012)—to earn league scholar-athlete honors.
Wisner began the 2021 campaign with an eighth-place overall finish at the Lewis & Clark Opener, good for fourth in the team race and third in the UO scoring lineup. He owns an 8K season best of 24:29.0 at the Dellinger Invitational, a top-75 finish in the loaded field. In his latest outing, Wisner was 42nd in the 'B' race at the Nuttycombe Invitational.
This past spring, Wisner qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the 800 meters. During the season, he posted season bests of 1:48.13 at 800 meters and 3:42.95 at 1500 meters.
The 2021 Pac-12 Championships are being held at the Regional Athletic Complex in Salt Lake City with television coverage beginning at 9 a.m. (PT) on the Pac-12 Network. The men's 8K starts at 9:10 a.m. followed an hour later by the women's 6K.
Christina Aragon of Stanford was the women's scholar-athlete recipient.
