CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon women's golf team returned to competition for the first time in more than 330 days this weekend, kicking off the long-awaited 2021 spring season a win over rival Oregon State in a two-day exhibition at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
"It was so great to be back out on the course with our team in a competitive setting," said head coach Derek Radley. "We waited a long time for this and I was really impressed with how our student-athletes performed the first time out. This is a special group with a chance to do some big things this spring."
Playing two rounds of head-to-head stroke play, the Ducks defeated the Beavers by a score of 20-16 after leading 10-8 through 18 holes. There were six head-to-head matches with three points available per matchup, per round. A point was awarded each round to the winner of the front nine, the winner of the back nine, and the winner of the overall round.
Sophomore Ching-Tzu Chen (73, 69) and freshman Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu (71, 71) each shot even-par across 36 holes to lead the way for the Ducks, with sophomore Briana Chacon (71, 72) just one stroke behind. Senior Alexis Phadungmartvorakul joined Chen as Ducks to break 70 with a 2-under 69 of her own on Sunday.
Along with a round at Eugene Country Club on Friday, this weekend's action served as Oregon's qualifying rounds to determine the lineup for the Ducks' first tournament of the spring. UO will head to Phoenix, Ariz., next for the Sun Devil Winter Classic on Feb. 15-17.
