Oregon Athletics Highlights Sustainability Efforts With Annual Green Game
11/17/22 | General
The University of Oregon athletic department is committed to sustainability initiatives and is highlighting many of the efforts during the annual Green Game at Autzen Stadium, which takes place during the home finale against Utah on Saturday (November 19).
Fans are encouraged to prioritize sustainability when making transportation plans, and UO Athletics is assisting by coordinating the Autzen Shuttle that runs every game day. This shuttle provides round-trip transportation from four locations around Eugene to the South Gate at Autzen Stadium. Additionally, fans wishing to ride their bikes can do so and park in the Duck Pen, which is a safe and convenient location operated by Local 20/30 as a fundraiser for their community activities.
The UO Athletic Department operates its own concessions at its facilities and prioritizes locally sourced products whenever possible, which are highlighted in the Mighty Oregon stands located at Sections 22 and 39 in Autzen Stadium. All concession stands offer re-useable souvenir cups, and for this game, a limited number of re-useable, 20-ounce stainless steel vacuum mugs will be available in concession stands for $20.
Charity groups and non-profits from throughout the Willamette Valley and state of Oregon operate game day concession stands to earn much-needed funds for their individual causes, and this provides an annual impact in excess of $600,000 per year for these groups.
The UO Athletic Department has also gone fully digital this year with all of our team yearbooks, posters and schedules
A football game at Autzen Stadium also offers numerous recycling opportunities. Local Boy Scout groups collect recyclables throughout the stadium parking lots, and individuals are stationed at the main entrances to Autzen Stadium identifying recyclables, ensuring they reach the correct container as fans enter the stadium. Recyclables are sorted from all trash collected in the stands, and the UO Athletics partnership with Sanipac allows the waste from Autzen Stadium to be processed at Juno, which helps recover resources from event waste that would have otherwise gone to landfill.
Additionally, Food for Lane County is the recipient of over 800 lbs. of food each game that was not consumed by patrons.
There are many local groups who are able to fundraise at Autzen Stadium, including the organizations surrounding Autzen who do so through their parking programs on game days. In addition to the groups that work in the concession areas, many groups fundraise by clean-ups before, during and after the games. If your group has any interest in becoming involved in game days at Autzen Stadium, please send an email to gingers@uoregon.edu.
