Ducks In Sixth After Day One Of Lamkin Invitational
02/14/22 | Women's Golf
RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – The Oregon women's golf team is in sixth place at the Lamkin Invitational after finishing the first day of its 2022 spring season at 12-over par on Monday at The Farms Golf Club.
The No. 4 Ducks were in fourth place after shooting a 3-over 291 in the first round, and sat at 9-over par in the second round when play was suspended due to darkness. Oregon will finish up the second round on Tuesday morning before moving on to the third and final round.
"It was an up-and-down kind of day for us today," head coach Derek Radley said. "We got off to a pretty good start in the first round but struggled a bit down the stretch, and we allowed that to carry over into the second round. I'm pleased with the way our team kept battling on the back nine and made some progress back up the leaderboard. This is a really strong field and we're going to need to tighten some things up in order to earn a good finish tomorrow."
Oregon was led by junior Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen, who fired a 3-under 69 in the opening round and is tied for seventh overall at 1 under after carding a 2-over 74 in round two.
How it Happened: The Ducks jumped out to an early lead in round one, as Nielsen, Lu, Ching-Tzu Chen and Tze-Han (Heather) Lin all notched at least two birdies in their first five holes. The Ducks hovered near the top of the leaderboard for most of round one before finishing in fourth place at 3 over.
A slow start to round two saw the Ducks fall to as low as 10th place midway through the round. Cleaner play later in the afternoon helped Oregon move back up to sixth by the time play was suspended, two strokes behind fifth-place Texas and three back of fourth-place UCLA. No. 1 Stanford leads the field at 2-under par, with San Jose State in second at 2 over and Arizona State in third at 5 over.
Nielsen was terrific in round one, making four birdies in her first 10 holes to get to 4-under par. After her only bogey of the round, the Denmark native closed the round with five straight pars to come in with a 69. She got off to a slow start in round two – sitting at 5-over par through eight holes – but she shot 3 under across her final 10 holes to finish with a 74 and end the day at 1 under. She is currently one of nine players below par, three strokes back of individual leader Emma Spitz (UCLA, -4).
Sophomore Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu is tied for 21st overall at 4 over through two rounds, bouncing back from a 5-over 77 in round one to fire a 1-under 71 in round two. Lu was 2 over through nine holes in the second round before rattling off three straight birdies and then finishing with six consecutive pars.
Junior Ching-Tzu Chen was solid in the opening round, finishing one stroke behind Nielsen with a 2-under 70 while leading the Ducks with six birdies. She wasn't as clean in the second round, sitting at 8 over with one hole left to finish on Tuesday.
Senior Tze-Han (Heather) Lin contributed to the first-round score with a 3-over 75, making five birdies. A bogey, a double and triple in the second round are the lone blemishes in an otherwise solid round that has her at 4 over with the 18th hole remaining on Tuesday.
Junior Brittany Shin made her UO debut on Monday, shooting a 78 in round one before coming back with a 4-over 76 in round two. Shin joined the Ducks over the summer after being named the Big West Player of the Year last spring for Cal State Fullerton.
