Ducks Remain Perfect at Home
02/10/23 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon improved to 4-0 at home and snapped Iowa's three-match winning streak Friday afternoon, defeating the Hawkeyes 4-1 at the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks (4-2) earned the doubles point for the fourth time this season, picking up wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions to claim a 1-0 lead. In singles, four of the six matches went the full three sets before Oregon was able to walk away with its second straight win.
"I feel like after this match our team got better," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "There are some matches where you're like, 'man, this team pushed us and really tested us.' They didn't give in and we really had to earn this match. That's the feeling that I have after playing this match.
"We (won) four first sets, and those girls didn't go away, they fought. And the two first sets that we lost, we fought. No one was going to five in and it was a matter of who was going to take it. It was really good for us to be in that moment on many of the courts and be tested like that."
Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral eased to a 6-2 win over Marisa Schmidt and Anya Lamoreaux at the top doubles spot. Luescher and Martinez Moral moved their doubles record to 3-2 this spring. Jo-Yee Chan and Ares Teixido Garcia kept their undefeated doubles record intact, prevailing 6-4 over the Hawkeyes' pair of Samantha Mannix and Pia Kranholdt.
Lillian Mould made her spring debut, partnering with Misaki Kobayashi at the third doubles position. The duo's match went unfinished after UO clinched the doubles point.
Oregon's lead swelled to 3-0 after straight-set singles wins by Chan (6-2, 6-3) and Teixido Garcia (6-2, 7-6 (3)). Chan defeated Lamareaux at the sixth position while Teixido Garcia bested Mannix at the No. 2 singles spot.
The remaining four singles matches all went the full three sets. Iowa got on the board via Daianne Hayashida's win over Karin Young at No. 4, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2, but Martinez Moral rebounded from a second-set loss to oust Barora Pokorna in three sets, 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-4, for the fourth and deciding point.
Martinez Moral (4-1) and Teixido Garcia (4-2) each picked up their team-best fourth singles wins of the young season.
Luescher, at No. 1, and Myah Petchey, playing at No. 3, each went unfinished with leads in the third sets of their respective matches.
UO improved to 4-0 at home while picking up its second straight win of the homestand. The Ducks snapped the Hawkeyes' three-match winning streak and leveled the all-time series, 3-3.
The Ducks continue their homestand Sunday against Saint Mary's at 11 a.m. PT at the Student Tennis Center.
