Chen Goes Low In First Round Of Spring

PALOS VERDES, Calif. — Senior Ching-Tzu Chen led the Oregon women's golf team in the Ducks' first round of the 2023 spring season on Sunday at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club.
The No. 5 Ducks are in fifth place after finishing day one with a 4-over 288. No. 18 Baylor leads the field at 2-under par, with No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 San Jose State and Ohio State tied for second at 2 over.
Chen was stellar in Oregon's No. 1 spot in the lineup, firing a 3-under 68 to sit in a tie for second place individually after 18 holes.
How it Happened: The Ducks sat atop the leaderboard for a good portion of the first round, making nine birdies against just seven bogeys on the front nine. Oregon was unable to keep that pace on the back nine, with six birdies against seven bogeys, four double bogeys and a triple bogey.
Chen got off to a blistering start, making four birdies in her first five holes to quickly get to 4-under par. The senior made a bogey at No. 9 to make the turn at 3 under, and then made seven pars with one birdie and one bogey on the back to finish with a 68.
Baylor's Silje Ohma is the individual leader at 5-under par.
Senior Briana Chacon and junior Ashleigh Park each came in with a 1-over 72, and junior Minori Nagano rounded out Oregon's counting scores with a 5-over 76. Nagano made four birdies, just one behind Chen's five, and Chacon was a model of consistency with 15 total pars.
