Lu, Park Headline Improved Final Round
03/01/23 | Women's Golf
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Oregon women's golf team bounced back from a pair of tough days to close the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with a strong 1-over 285 in Wednesday's final round at Long Cove Club.
The No. 3 Ducks posted the second-best team score of the final round, moving up three spots on the leaderboard to finish in ninth place overall at 25-over. Oregon's 1-over day was a significant improvement after shooting a combined 24-over par through the first two rounds.
"This wasn't the performance we were hoping for, but it was a great experience for our team to travel East and compete against such a talented field in a nationally televised tournament," head coach Derek Radley said. "I'm proud of the way our student-athletes kept their heads up and put together a solid final round today. We're looking forward to getting home, taking a little break, and then getting back to work."
Juniors Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu and Ashleigh Park led the way for the Ducks in the final round. Lu matched the best individual round of the week with a stellar 4-under 67, and Park fired an even-par 71 to earn her fourth top-10 finish of the season in a tie for fourth overall.
How it Happened: Park was as steady as they come for a second day in a row, making 16 pars with one birdie and one bogey to finish at even par for the day. After closing Tuesday's round with 15 straight pars, Park carried a streak of 30 straight holes without a bogey before just barely missing a par putt on her 16th hole of the day.
Park finished in a four-way tie for fourth at even par for the week, five strokes behind individual winner Mathilde Claisse (South Carolina). Park's even-par 71 on Wednesday was her team-leading 10th round of par-or-better on the season, and her four top-10 finishes also lead the Ducks.
Lu returned to form after some uncharacteristic struggles through the first two days. The reigning Pac-12 individual champion was flawless through her first nine holes, including a stretch of three birdies in four holes to make the turn at 3 under.
The Taiwan native made two bogeys in her final nine holes, but made up for it with three more birdies in her last five holes to come in with a 67. Lu was the biggest individual mover of the day, jumping up 38 spots on the leaderboard to earn a top-20 finish in a tie for 16th overall.
Senior Briana Chacon matched Park with an even-par 71, her best round of the week and fifth of par-or-better this season. The two-time all-American was 1 over through 17 holes before making a birdie on her final hole of the week.
Junior Minori Nagano rounded out the counting scores for the Ducks with a 5-over 76.
