
Ducks In Fifth Entering Final Round

PHOENIX — The Oregon women's golf team is in fifth place with one round remaining at the PING/ASU Invitational after firing a 2-over 290 for the second day in a row on Saturday at Papago Golf Course.
The No. 5 Ducks sit at 4-over par through 36 holes. No. 23 Northwestern leads the field at 12-under par, followed by No. 11 Arizona State (-4), No. 14 Baylor (+1) and No. 6 Mississippi State (+2).
How it Happened: Freshman Anika Varma led the way for the Ducks on Saturday, carding a 1-under 71 for her third par-or-better showing in just her fifth collegiate round. Varma was 2 over through her first five holes before going 3 under across her final 13, including three birdies in four holes on the back nine.
Senior Briana Chacon recorded an even-par 72 and is the top Duck on the leaderboard at 1-under par, following her 1-under 71 in Friday's opening round. The two-time all-American was 1 under on the back nine, making back-to-back birdies at No. 10 and No. 11.
Chacon enters Sunday's final round in a tie for sixth overall, six strokes off the lead. Varma's strong second round moved her up 12 spots into a tie for 10th overall at even par.
Junior Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu put together a solid round after not counting towards Oregon's score on Friday, matching Chacon with an even-par 72. Lu made par on her first 14 holes before carding a birdie, but a bogey at No. 17 brought her back to even.
Ching-Tzu Chen rounded out the Ducks' counting scores with a 3-over 75, and Brittany Shin followed with a 5-over 77. Minori Nagano, competing as an individual, finished with a 4-over 76.
