Ducks In Seventh Through 18 Holes In Napa
04/03/23 | Women's Golf
NAPA, Calif. — The Oregon women's golf team sits in seventh place after finishing the first round of the Silverado Showdown with an 11-over 299 on Monday at Silverado Resort and Spa.
The No. 8 Ducks had an uncharacteristic number of bogeys and double bogeys in the opening round, and will look for more consistent play on Tuesday and Wednesday as they wrap up the 2022-23 regular season. No. 16 Northwestern leads the 17-team field at 4-under par, with No. 9 Arizona State and No. 13 Texas A&M tied for second at 4 over.
How it Happened: Juniors Hsin-Yu (Cynthia) Lu and Ashleigh Park led the team to begin the week, each coming in with a 2-over 74. Lu – fresh off tying for fifth over the weekend at the prestigious Augusta National Women's Amateur – was 1-under par at the turn and 2-under par after a birdie at No. 10, but made back-to-back double bogeys on No. 11 and No. 12.
Making her return to the lineup after dealing with a minor injury, Park closed the front nine with three birdies in four holes to make the turn at 2 under. But she also made a double at No. 12, and then back-to-back bogeys at No. 16 and No. 17 to finish at 2 over.
Freshman Anika Varma came in with a 3-over 75, headlined by the first eagle of her collegiate career at the par-5 16th hole. Varma was one of just three players in the field to make an eagle in the first round.
Senior Ching-Tzu Chen rounded out Oregon's counting scores with a 4-over 76, shooting even on the back nine after making the turn at 4 over.
Oregon also had three individuals playing in the tournament, with junior Minori Nagano matching Lu and Park with a 2-over 74. Sophomore Baylee Hammericksen shot a 4-over 76 in her season debut.
