10/12/24 | Women's Tennis
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon women's tennis wrapped up the second full day of the ITA Northwest Regionals on Saturday, with senior Marjorie Souza advancing to the round of 32 in singles at Hellman Tennis Complex.
Souza was the lone Duck to win her first-round singles match and to earn a spot in the round of 32, as the UTRGV transfer won in straight sets against Portland's Nadine Arbaizar Martinez. Later in the day and with a place in the round of 16 on the line, she faced 64th-ranked Alexis Blokhina from Stanford, but fell 6-0, 6-1.
Candela Aparisi, Olivia Symons and Karin Young each dropped their first-round singles matchups. Symons lost to Lamija Avdic of Seattle, 6-4, 6-0, while Young lost a tight battle to Sacramento State's Lou Baudouin, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Aparisi fell to UC Davis' Solia Valentine 6-0, 6-4.
All three will play in the singles consolation bracket on Sunday.
On the doubles side, Tilde Jagare and Symons faced a tough Stanford duo of Connie Ma and Valeria Glozman in the round of 32, but lost a close 8-6 decision. Jagare and Symons advanced to the second round after a first-round victory on Friday.
Souza and sophomore Julia Visaya won their first doubles match of the tournament with a 6-2 victory over Arbaizar Martinez and Kyle Canubida of Portland in the consolation bracket. Souza and Visaya will meet Stanford's Chidimma Okpara and Morgan Shaffer on Sunday in the consolation quarterfinals.
Aparisi and Young, after a first-round bye, fell at the hands of Brooke Bittner and Norhan Hesham of Gonzaga 8-2 in the round of 32.
