UO Turns in Successful First Day of Duck Invitational

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team won five of six doubles matches while going 5-1 in singles on the first day of the Duck Invitational Friday at the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks began the day with three straight wins in the opening doubles round. Candela Aparisi and Marjorie Souza handled Washington State's Chisato Kanemaki and Martina Puvill, 6-2. Facing teams from Seattle, UO's tandems of Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons, and Julia Visaya and Karin Young each went on to 6-1 victories in their opening matches.
The doubles success continued in round two, with Aparisi and Young earning a 6-4 win over Idaho's Ida Johansson and Chenyue Xu. Visaya and Young collected their second doubles win of the day with a 6-1 triumph over Hannah Koprowska and Naomi Schraeder.
In singles, the Ducks got straight-set victories from Aparisi, Symons and Souza. Symons cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Boise State's Lorelyz Maruffo, while Aparisi got by Paula Schaeffer of the Broncos 6-1, 6-3, and Souza ousted Idaho's Selin Sepkin, 6-2, 6-2.
Jagare and Visaya each needed a three-set tiebreaker for their respective victories. Jagare overcame a first-set loss to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 against the Broncos' Masa Viriant. Visaya outlasted Ariadna Briones of Boise State, 6-2, 5-7, 10-8.
The three-day event continues Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Student Tennis Center. Admission is free and open to all fans.
