Solhaug Goes Low, Finishes Fifth at Pac-12 Championships
04/28/24 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Oregon men's golfer Greg Solhaug fired a 1-under 70 in the final round to finish fifth at the 2024 Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships on Sunday at Desert Forest Golf Club. As a group, the 24th-ranked Ducks finished in a tie for fourth with No. 11 Washington at 48 over par.
Solhaug sank 13 pars with three birdies on the day, shooting his second-below par round of the tournament to finish solo fifth. Joining him in the top 10 was Eric Doyle, who finished the tournament 7 over to stand alone in 10th place.
Oregon entered the day among a group of four teams that were separated by just five strokes. The Ducks shot a 13-over 368 in the final round, two strokes better than their third-round score, and held their position in the standings as they finished in a tie for fourth. Host Arizona State took home this year's conference crown as the Sun Devils were the only team to go below par on Sunday, allowing them to separate themselves from the pack.
"We gave it our best shot, just ran out of gas at the end," head coach Casey Martin said. "My guys really battled."
How It Happened: With two birdies through his first six holes, Solhaug started the round on the right foot before bogeys on holes nine and 11 brought him back to even par midway through his round. The senior responded to the setback by playing bogey-free golf the remainder of the way, adding a birdie on hole 15 on his way to earning his fourth top-10 finish of the season.
Doyle entered the week as Oregon's No. 6 player but played a huge role throughout the week for the Ducks as each of his four rounds counted towards his team's score. Doyle was 1 under through 14 on Sunday with the help of three birdies, but trouble on the final four holes led to a 3-over finish for the day. The junior finished the tournament in 10th place, shooting 7 over across all four rounds.
Greyson Leach showed consistency across his round, making a team-high 14 pars on the day. Two bogeys on the front and another pair on the back led to Leach carding a 75 for the third time this tournament as the junior finished tied for 22nd at 13 over.
Owen Avrit and Nate Stember each secured counting rounds for the second straight day on Sunday, carding 73 and 76, respectively. Avrit shot 3 under through his first 14 holes before trouble in the latter stages of his round and finished the tournament tied for 52nd. Stember used seven par-or-better holes on the back nine to help fuel his round as the senior finished the tournament tied for 39th at 17 over.
Despite a frustrating final two rounds, Aiden Krafft was the Ducks' fourth-best finisher for the tournament at 15 over. The sophomore used four birdies from holes 6-13 to help his cause in the final 18 as he finished tied for 34th on the leaderboard.
