A daily recap and preview of current and former UO athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Games.
The Day That Was …
It was a day to remember for three former Oregon women's basketball players, as Sabrina Ionescu, Nyara Sabally and Satou Sabally were each victorious in their Olympic debuts.
The Sabally sisters helped Germany to a win in its first-ever Olympic Games contest – an 83-69 triumph over Belgium to begin Group C action. The duo combined for 33 points and 11 rebounds, with Satou scoring 17 points (8-for-10 from the free throw line) and Nyara going 6-for-7 from the field in scoring 16 points in 25 minutes.
In the day's later Group C matchup, Team USA took care of business against Japan with a 102-76 victory. Ionescu scored 11 points, connecting on a team-high three 3-pointers, while adding three rebounds and five assists in just over 19 minutes of action. It marked the 56th straight Olympic win for the U.S., who seeks its eighth straight Olympic gold.
Both Germany and the United States are back in action on Thursday. Germany will take on Japan (2 a.m. PT) with the U.S. facing Belgium at 12 p.m. PT. The two sides will conclude pool play against each other on Sunday at 8:15 a.m. PT.
A Look Ahead …
Three more athletes with Duck ties will compete on Tuesday in Dillon Brooks (men's basketball), Elisa Mevius (3x3 women's basketball) and Claire Michel (triathlon).
Brooks and Team Canada will play their second group play game against Australia at 4:30 a.m. PT., after the Canadians opened the Games with an 86-79 victory over Greece in Group A.
Mevius and her 3x3 German side begin its pool round against the United States at 8:30 a.m. PT. Mevius is an incoming transfer for the Ducks and is one of four current UO student-athletes competing in these Paris Games.
Competing for Belgium, Michel will compete for a medal in the women's triathlon, which begins at 11 p.m. PT.
