The Day That Was …
Tuesday brought two more victories on the hardwood, one for Elisa Mevius (3x3) and Dillon Brooks. Mevius helped Germany spur a 17-13 upset of the U.S. to open 3x3 action, while Brooks helped Team Canada improve to 2-0 with a 93-83 win over Australia in Group A of the men's tournament.
Germany fell behind the United States 5-0 before going on a 6-0 run to claim its first lead, with Mevius scoring three of her four points in that stretch. Later, the game was tied at 11 before Germany closed on a 6-2 scoring run. The game marked the first for both sides of the 3x3 event.
Brooks scored 16 points, tied for second on the team, behind 5-of-9 shooting, including going 2-of-3 from deep. Brooks added three rebounds and an assist, as Canada stands alone at the top of the Group A standings.
The pool round continues for Mevius and Germany on Wednesday, as they take on Australia at 8:30 a.m. PT. Brooks and Team Canada conclude Group A play on Friday against Spain (8:15 a.m. PT).
Additionally, former UO athlete Claire Michel is set to compete in the triathlon Tuesday night at 11 p.m. PT.
A Look Ahead …
Along with Mevius and Germany competing on the court Wednesday, so will former Duck star Maite Cazorla and Spain. Spain looks to improve to 2-0 in Group A against Puerto Rico at 2 a.m. PT.
Spain opened its competition with a 90-89 overtime victory over second-ranked China on Sunday. Cazorla, competing in her second straight Olympic Games with Spain, scored eight points with a pair of assists in the win.
Mevius' side will play six more pool-round contests over the next four days in hopes of qualifying for the knockout round.
