A daily recap and preview of current and former UO athletes competing at the 2024 Paris Games.
The Day That Was …
It was a perfect day for the Ducks on both the full and half court. Satou Sabally led Germany to a 74-64 win over Japan to improve to 2-0 in Group C, while Elisa Mevius helped the German 3x3 squad to a doubleheader sweep of Canada and Azerbaijan. Sabrina Ionescu and the U.S. Women's National Team held off Belgium, 87-74, to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
Sabally's 33-point effort tied for the eighth-highest total in a single game at the Olympics – and she did so while shooting 64.7 percent from the floor (11-for-17). She added six rebounds and three assists in helping Germany qualify for the quarterfinals in its first Olympic Games appearance.
In 3x3 action, Mevius and her team improved to 3-1 and sit in a three-way tie in the pool standings after the third day of competition. Germany began the day with a 19-15 win over Canada before a 12-7 victory over Azerbaijan later in the day.
Mevius totaled seven points and two rebounds against the Canadians and added three points and four boards against Azerbaijan. Germany sits tied atop the Pool A standings with Australia and Canada at 3-1. The top two teams will automatically qualify for the semifinals on Aug. 5, with the next four teams competing in the play-in games on Aug. 3.
Ionescu and the United States fended off European champion Belgium in their second contest of these Games. The U.S. led by eight at halftime and by seven through three quarters, which is as close as the Belgians would get in the fourth quarter.
Ionescu finished with six points, including a deep 3-pointer with just second remaining in the game. She added five assists and three rebounds in 19 minutes, helping the U.S. to its 57th straight Olympic victory.
In men's golf, Wyndham Clark got off to a slow start in the opening round, shooting a 4-over 75 a Le Golf National. Clark picked up three birdies in his round, with two coming on the back nine. He currently sits in a tie for 56th place.
A Look Ahead …
It will be another full day of women's basketball Ducks competing on Thursday, first with Mevius and Germany.
Mevius' 3x3 team will play a second straight doubleheader on Friday, this time against China (12 a.m. PT) and later facing France at 12:30 p.m. PT. China is 2-2 through four contests while France is 1-3.
Men's basketball alum Dillon Brooks will lead Team Canada in its final group-stage contest against Spain at 8:15 a.m. PT. Canada (2-0) has already qualified for the quarterfinal round and is looking sweep the group stage.
Track and field qualification begins for a couple of former Ducks on Friday. Cole Hocker will begin the first round of the men's 1,500 meters (2:05 a.m. PT) for the United States while Jorinde Van Klinken begins qualification in the women's discus for the Netherlands at 9:55 a.m. PT.
In men's golf, Clark will tee off in his second round at approximately 2:44 a.m. PT a Le Golf National. Clark will again be paired with Hideki Matsuyama (Japan), who is the leader after round one at 8-under, and Tommy Fleetwood (Great Britain).
