The Day That Was …
Four former Ducks were in action in the women's basketball quarterfinals, including Sabrina Ionescu and Team USA who picked up an 88-74 win over Nigeria. The U.S. led by 19 points at halftime and by as many as 30 in the third quarter. Ionescu logged two points, one assist and one rebound in just over six minutes of action.
The United States, who has won 59 straight games at the Olympics, will meet Australia in the semifinals on Friday at 8:30 a.m. PT on its quest for an eighth straight gold medal. Host France and Belgium will meet in the other semifinal at 12 p.m. PT on Friday.
Germany's run in its first-ever Olympic Games came to an end in the quarterfinal with an 84-71 loss to France. Nyara Sabally, who missed the last two games due to injury, returned to the lineup to produce a 20-point, 13-rebound double-double to lead her team. Satou Sabally finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
In an earlier quarterfinal matchup, Maite Cazorla and Spain were upset by Belgium, 79-66. Cazorla finished second on the team with 13 points while knocking down 3-of-5 3-point attempts in shooting 50.0 percent overall from the floor (5-of-10).
In the first round of the women's 100-meter hurdles, UO alum Alaysha Johnson qualified for the semifinal with a time of 12.61. Johnson, competing for the United States, will run in the semifinals on Friday at 3:05 a.m. PT after finishing second in her heat. All three Americans--Johnson, Masai Russell and Grace Stark--safely advanced.
Representing Italy in the men's triple jump, Emmanual Ihemeje competed in the qualifying round Wednesday, but did not advance to the event's final after his best jump of 16.50 meters. He finished 20th overall.
A Look Ahead …
Track and field will again take center stage on Thursday, with reigning NCAA champion Jadia Ross and Jorinde Van Klinken beginning shot put qualification at 1:25 a.m. PT. Ross will be representing the United States while Van Klinken will compete for her home of the Netherlands.
The women's 4x100-meter relay will hit the track next, with Kemba Nelson (Jamaica) scheduled for racing in round one of the event at 2:10 a.m. PT. Jamaica runs in heat two.
Following the women, the U.S. men's 4x100-meter relay team featuring Kyree King will take the track for their first round of qualifying at 2:35 a.m. PT.
Later in the day, Klaudia Kazimiersa (Poland) and past UO standouts Susan Ejore (Kenya) and Jessica Hull (Australia) will race in the semifinals in the women's 1,500 meters. The first of two heats will run at approximately 10:35 a.m. PT, with the top six in each heat qualifying for Saturday's final.
