Ducks Pick Up Close Win at Iowa
02/19/25 | Men's Basketball
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Ducks came out on top, 80-78, in a game that saw seven lead changes and a last-second chance for the Hawkeyes that was blocked by Nate Bittle as time expired.
Bittle led the way with 20 points, 10 rebounds and three crucial blocks for the Ducks. The big man impacted both ends of the court, forcing Iowa to double-team him on offense and switching onto the Hawkeyes best playmakers on defense.
How It Happened: Oregon started hot in this one, building a 9-5 lead at the first media timeout. The Ducks held the Hawkeyes to 20 percent shooting in the first four minutes, with TJ Bamba scoring five early points. Iowa shot themselves back into the contest in the next four minutes of game time to tie the game at 20, led by Payton Sandfort, who hit his first three shots. UO answered with a six-zero run after the break. Nate Bittle was a force in the middle of the half, scoring 10 of the Ducks first 26 points. The Ducks held a six point lead for most of the remainder of the first half, with all nine Ducks scoring in the half. At the break, Oregon led 45-37 and shot 52.9 percent in the half.
Iowa quickly eliminated the Ducks lead to start the second half, outscoring Oregon 12-4 in the first five minutes to tie the game at 49. The Hawkeyes took the first lead since the first basket of the game with 14 minutes left, but the Ducks answered with a three each from Barthelemy and Bamba to go up by five with 12:34 to play. The Ducks held their lead until the next timeout, responding to Iowa's baskets with good lucks of their own. Ra'Heim Moss hit his second three of the season followed by Jadrian Tracey's second three of the evening to keep the advantage at the under-eight media timeout.
Sandfort kept the Hawkeyes in the game, reaching 25 points on the night. Iowa took a late with three minutes remaining, but Bittle answered with a huge three as the shot clock expired. Oregon twice thought the game was in-hand after a Shelstad deep three and an out of bounds call that also went the way of Iowa to give them one more possession with four seconds left. Josh Dix got the ball at the top of the key for Iowa, but Bittle blocked the last second attempt to secure the win.
Notable: Nate Bittle recorded his second 20-point, 10-rebound game in a row, adding to his conference-leading block total with three on the night. TJ Bamba again went for 10 points and six assists, while Keeshawn Barthelemy and Brandon Angel each added 10 points.
