
Day One Split at Pepperdine

The Ducks swept Hope International for the team’s seventh win of the season.
MALIBU, Calif. – The Oregon beach volleyball team split a pair of matches on day one of the Pepperdine Dual Days. The Ducks dropped a 3-2 setback to host Pepperdine in their opener but responded with a 5-0 sweep of Hope International. With Friday's results, Oregon moves to 7-17 this season.
Hanna Bjornson and Kamilah Checani secured the Ducks' first point of the weekend with a 21-19, 21-13 win at No. 4 pairs. It was their third win in four outings together. The host team pulled even at 1-all with a straight-set result at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Pepperdine won the first set in two of three matches in the second wave of play, with the exception of Natasha George and Liz Rossi at No. 5 pairs. The Ducks took a 2-1 match lead when the duo closed out its match with a 21-15, 21-16 scoreline. Similar to the beginning of the dual, the Wave answered with a victory at the top spot.
On the final court in play, Landree Coats and Daley McClellan dropped the first set but tied things up on court three—16-21, 21-18—to force a decisive, and match-deciding, third set. With the score tied at 5-5, the Pepperdine team of Emma Eden and Ella Foti won five of the next six points and went on to win the match—15-9 in the third—and clinch the dual for the home team.
Coats and McClellan were right back at it, securing the first point of the dual against Hope International. They were moved up to No. 2 pairs and responded with a 21-10, 21-11 victory. The Ducks' lead was 2-0 after Bjornson and Checani racked up their second win of the day with a 21-13, 21-13 result at on court four.
The UO team of Bella Gamache and Ella Tyus clinched the dual with its 21-8, 21-13 sweep at No. 1 pairs. Individually, the win was Tyus' 42nd of her career, just one shy of second place on the UO all-time list.
The Ducks went on to complete the dual sweep with straight-set win at No. 5 and 3 pairs, respectively. Kendall Clark and Sofia Taylor teamed up for a 21-17, 21-14 triumph while Michelle Ohwobete and Izzy Patterson closed out the day with a 21-15, 21-14 victory on court three.
The Ducks face the same two opponents Saturday beginning with Hope International at 12 p.m. to be followed by a rematch with Pepperdine at 2 p.m. It will be the final day of the regular season with the MPSF Championships set for April 23-25 in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Friday marked the Ducks' first-ever meetings with Hope International and Pepperdine.
