Senior Day Ends in Victory
04/20/25 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – So many times this season back-and-forth matches have not gone in favor of the Oregon women's tennis team, but on Sunday in the regular-season finale, the Ducks came from behind to defeat No. 73 Nebraska 4-2 on Senior Day at the UO Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks (9-13, 2-11) fell behind 2-0 after Nebraska (12-12, 2-11) won the doubles point and the first singles match of the day. UO rallied to win the next four singles matches – two of which went to a third set while four matches features tiebreakers.
It was fitting on Senior Day that senior Marjorie Souza clinched the decisive final point on Centre court, rallying to win the final two sets after dropping the opening frame, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. The win snapped a 12-match skid at the top spot in the lineup for Souza and a five-game losing stream as a team.
Sophomore Candela Aparisi got the Ducks' first team point of the day, winning at No. 5 7-5, 7-6 (6). Aparisi trailed 5-2 in the second set before rallying to win the second set in a tiebreaker. The win was her second of the weekend, as she finished with a 5-4 dual singles record.
Fellow sophomore Tilde Jagare followed behind Aparisi on court three, winning 7-6 (6), 7-5 to even the team score at 2-2. The win was Jagare's team-leading 11th singles win of the season and snapped her three-match skid.
Freshman Juliet Santitto kept her hot streak going with a 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-1 on court six to give Oregon its first lead of the day, 3-2. Santitto picked up her fifth win over her final seven matches, finishing with a 5-2 mark at the sixth spot in the lineup.
In doubles action at the beginning of the day, Oregon's No. 1 doubles team of Jagare and Santitto swept their match 6-0 against the Cornhuskers. The duo finished with a team-best eight doubles wins this spring.
The victory marked UO's first against a ranked team this season, with 11 of 13 Big Ten outings coming against teams ranked in the ITA's top 75.
Prior to the Ducks' regular-season finale, the team recognized seniors Souza and Karin Young. Young is a four-year letterwinner for the Ducks who collected 63 career dual singles wins, which is just two shy of entering UO's career top-10 list. Souza completed her first season in Eugene after spending three years at UTRGV.
