O Show Nominees: Higdon Trophy
05/25/25 | General
Looking ahead to potential winners at the athletic department's annual O Show on Tuesday night.
On Tuesday, May 27, the UO athletic department will stage the annual O Show, a traditional end-of-year celebration of the accomplishments of Oregon student-athletes both in athletics and academics.
Nominations for the various awards to be handed out Tuesday were made through the coaching staffs and academic advisors of all teams, with the award winners selected through a vote of student-athletes and department staff. There are also awards for coaches, faculty and support staff who go above and beyond to provide an exceptional student-athlete experience.
Due to the timing of the show, accomplishments from the beginning of May 2024 through the end of April 2025 are considered for the honors.
In the days leading up to the show, we'll preview some of the awards to be handed out Tuesday.
Today's category: The Doyle Higdon Memorial Trophy, named in honor of a former member of Oregon's football and track and field teams, who was killed in an accident following his sophomore year. It's awarded to a sophomore student-athlete for achievements in athletics, scholarship and citizenship.
And the nominees are …
Mia Barnett, cross country/track and field
Capped her track and field season last spring by finishing fifth at the 2024 Pac-12 Championships and then qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 1,500 meters. Helped Oregon win two Big Ten championships earlier this year by taking seventh at the conference meet in cross country, then taking second in the mile and helping Oregon win the distance-medley relay at the Big Ten Indoor Championship meet. Carries a 3.24 grade-point average.
Sofia Bell, women's basketball
Recently honored with the University of Oregon's Vernon Barkhurst Sophomore Award. The award honors a university sophomore - from the student body at large, not specifically the athletic department - who best exemplifies academic excellence, university service and good citizenship. Maintained a 3.99 GPA while playing in 28 games and starting 11 for the Ducks as they made their return to the NCAA Tournament this past season.
Isabella Gamache, indoor volleyball/beach volleyball
Carries a 3.62 grade-point average while also contributing to both UO volleyball programs. After contributing depth to the indoor team that made the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament last fall, the native of nearby Monroe, Ore., played on Oregon's No. 1 pairing in beach this spring. Teamed with Ella Tyus to win 10 times on the sand, including two-set sweeps in both of the Ducks' home matches.
Dante Moore, football
Redshirted in football last fall while appearing in five games for the Big Ten champions and College Football Playoff quarterfinalists, and maintained a 3.58 GPA in the process. Was a perfect 6-of-6 passing against rivals Oregon State and Washington, then had a strong showing in Oregon's Spring Game this April by completing 12-of-20 passes for 140 yards.
Kiara Romero, women's golf
Capped Oregon's first season in the Big Ten by winning the individual conference title and helping Oregon win as a team at the championship tournament in April. That was Romero's fourth top-two finish in five tournaments to that point in the spring, and she was named Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Year. Also carries a 3.18 grade-point average.
