EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's basketball team honored four players at its annual postseason banquet Friday evening at McArthur Court.
The event, attended by about 400 guests, was held on the McArthur Court floor in conjunction with the 25th year of the women competing in the historic arena.
Teammates voted senior guard Alissa Edwards (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston HS) as the Most Valuable Player and Best Defensive Player. She scored 5.8 points and grabbed 3.0 rebounds per game and led the team with averages of 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals. Edwards, who started all 28 games, also ranked second on the team with 28 3-pointers on 81 attempts (35 percent) en route to Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 honors. Edwards also earned the Best Defensive Player distinction after her sophomore season in 2001.
Sophomore guard Amy Taylor (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood HS) also reeled in two awards. She was voted the Most Improved Player as well as the recipient of the Harry Ritchie Scholar-Athlete Award. Taylor averaged 4.0 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists in a reserve role and shot 50 percent from the floor and 37 percent from 3-point range. She scored 97 points this year, including three double-figure scoring games, compared to just 18 points as a freshman last year. Taylor, a pre-journalism major at UO, maintained a 4.2 grade-point average in the winter term.
The Most Inspirational player was senior guard Kourtney Shreve (Albany, Ore./West Albany HS). A four-year letterwinner, Shreve averaged 1.4 points and 1.0 assists in 26 games for Oregon this past season. The previous two years, she had won the Harry Ritchie Scholar-Athlete Award.
Last, teammates selected freshman post player Carolyn Ganes (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Aden Bowman) as the Most Valuable Newcomer. Ganes co-led the team in scoring with a 10.9 average and shot 47 percent from the floor, 40 percent on 3-pointers and 79 percent on free throws. She played in all 28 games, making 15 starts for the Ducks.
The Ducks finished 12-16 and tied for fifth in the Pac-10 Conference with an 8-10 record.
