No. 3 Washington Defeats No. 22 Oregon, 9-0
April 11, 2003
EUGENE - The third-ranked Washington Huskies (35-5-1 overall, 4-3 Pacific-10 Conference) defeated No. 22 Oregon, 9-0, in five innings at Howe Field Friday afternoon. Oregon is now 20-12, 2-6 on the season.
"I'm proud of these kids," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen. "We had opportunities to score in the first inning and we didn't, but they kept battling. I know that if we come out and worry about our own performance we can compete with anybody in this conference. Now we have to focus on UCLA."
Washington clean-up hitter Kristen Rivera hit a two-out two run home run in the top of the first inning to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead early in the game. The Huskies extended their lead in the third inning when shortstop Jaime Clark scored on an Oregon error. In the fourth inning, Washington went ahead 4-0 on a solo home run by Dena Tyson.
Oregon freshman Beth Boskovich finished the game 1-for-1 with a double in the first inning and sophomore Erin Goodell and Amber Hutchison accounted for the Ducks' other hits of the game. Oregon freshman pitcher Amy Harris (7-9) struck out four batters and allowed five hits in four innings pitched while Washington junior Tia Bollinger improved to 19-4 on the season with the win.
The Huskies scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead and Oregon was unable to score in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Oregon's continues Pac-10 play at home tomorrow, hosting No. 2 UCLA at 2 p.m.
