Track Teams Open West Track & Field Regional with Six NCAA Qualifers

STANFORD, Calif. - One of four first-day NCAA qualifiers, University of Oregon redshirt senior Becky Holliday paced the meet headlines with a collegiate pole vault record, while the men's squad qualified two individuals the qualifying-heavy first day action in the first day of the inaugural West Regional Championships at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field.
On the men's side, senior hammer thrower Adam Kriz wrapped up his final preparation for an NCAA return with runner-up honors (207-7) thanks to a daily best on his initial throw. Stanford rival Nick Welhizokiy won the event (212-0), with all the marks surprisingly low and only two throwers topping the 200-foot mark.
In other field event action, freshman Jeff Lindsey popped one of his best jumps of the year when he cleared the highest opening height of his career (6-8), but missed his ensuing tries at 6-9 3/4 to finish in a tie for ninth overall. Fellow freshman Chad Clason missed his tries at the opening height of 6-8.
On the track, redshirt sophomore Eric Logsdon earned his first NCAA invite with a third-place effort in the 5,000 (13:54.28), and trailed only Stanford's Louis Luchini (first, 13:45.36) and Seth Hejny (13:51.72). The Canby, Ore., native Logsdon was less than two seconds off his personal best from the Oregon Invite (13:52.62), and improved two places off his pre-meet fifth-place seeding.
"I felt pretty relaxed and comfortable tonight," Logsdon said, "and this certainly felt easier than the other 5K from April. I made a big run after (Stanford's Adam) Tenforde in the final 1 1/2 laps when he was in second. I got him (In the final 150 meters), but unfortunately the other Stanford guy passed me before that. We had two race-plans going in depending on whether it was a fast race early or a slow, tactical one, and it ended up being a mix of the two. There were a couple of slower, 69-second laps early, so I stayed patient and tried to be ready to respond when the pace changed."
In other distance action, freshman Ryan Flaherty advanced to Saturday's 800 final after he took second in the first of two prelim heats (1:50.20. The Bend, Ore., native clipped off the second-fastest time of his career and was edged in his heat by USC frosh Raphael Asfao-Agyei who owned the day's fastest time (1:49.27). Flaherty's time also ranked fourth-fastest of the event's 15 entries.
Senior Samie Parker led action in the 100 with a win in the first of two heats (10.34). His time topped the preliminary results by a ..12-second margin, and was the second-fastest of his career behind his 10.18 clocking from the Pac-10 prelims. Parker also helped the 4x100 advance to Saturday's final with the fifth-fastest time (40.95) and a mark that ranked them third in their heat.
Freshman Matt Scherer led qualifying action in the 400 with a ..02-second personal best (46.85) to win the first of four heats. The Sumner, Ill., native also moved into a tie for 10th all-time at Oregon with former Duck Brad Coleman.
Also looking ahead to Saturday's final, freshman Eric Mitchum won the second heat of the 110 hurdle prelims (13.95) with the second-fastest time of the day even though he braved a -2.1 mps headwind, while first heat winner Tim Bogdanoff of California was aided by a +1.6 tailwind en route to a 13.51 daily leader. Mitchum's time was his sixth sub-14.00 clocking this season and the third among those that was wind-legal among his 11 races as a Duck.
On the women's side, second-year Duck Becky Holliday rewrote the collegiate record by 1/4 inches with her third-attempt clearance of 14-8. That mark - a two-inch improvement on her school and meet record from the Pacific-10 Conference Championships two weeks ago - also moved her to sixth all-time among Americans. Holliday even had an opportunity to go higher, but declined due to fatigue from the event that lasted more than five hours.
"I've never quit an event on a make, but I thought that was a good way to go today considering how tired I was," Holliday said. "It was a fun day to compete, and the conditions were great. Even though the winds were always changing, that didn't effect me. In fact, the crosswinds almost helped in that they maybe kept me from running too fast from the adrenaline and excitement."
However, Holliday fortunes didn't start off as promising as she opened with a first-attempt miss at 13-2 1/4 before clearing it on her second try. She then made her first attempts at 13-6 1/4 and 13-10, then capitalized on third-attempt tries at 14-2 and 14-8 (4.47m), with the final height one centimeter higher than the former NCAA mark set by former UCLA NCAA champion Tracy O'Hara in 2000.
"The opening miss really woke me up," Holliday said. "I'm always nervous until I clear that first bar - no matter how easy the height. However, I knew that after that miss that it could still be a good day based on how well I jumped on such a small pole - my speed and power were definitely there. When I moved to the higher heights I really focused on the first half of my take-off - I'm normally pretty good over the bar, but I need to be in better position earlier."
Already the top-ranked collegian this outdoor season and the NCAA runner-up indoors, Holliday's mark puts her back into the top five in the world this season - fourth to be exact - with a host of other bigger challenges on the horizon - most notably the NCAA Championships (6/11-15) in Sacramento, and the USA Championships (6/19-22) in Stanford.
"I'm glad that I didn't compete at the Pre meet last week, because I came into outdoors focused on a four-meet championship season, and this was only the second meet," Holliday said. "I felt rested and relaxed today after not competing last weekend. Also, being able to study people like Stacy Dragila and other competitors last week was really good for me. I saw how focused and committed they are at the upper heights, and I was able to use some of that myself today. But a record only means more pressure and expectations, so I need to go back to work and prepare for NCAA's."
Also in the pole vault, redshirt senior Niki McEwen earned her seventh NCAA trip in the event after tying for third Saturday at 13-6 1/4 - her second-best outdoor mark ever. The Newport, Ore., native opened with a first-attempt clearance at 13-2 1/4, then followed with a second-attempt make at 13-6 1/4.
Three other Ducks competed in the 40-woman field that had all cleared 12-0 during the year. Junior Kirsten Riley and sophomore tied for 16th with their third- and first-attempt clearances at 12-6 1/4, respectively, and redshirt senior Georgette Moyle tied for 24th with her first and final clearance of the day at 12-0 1/2. Moore's mark was a half-inch personal best and still ranks her seventh in school history, behind McEwen (second, 14-1 1/4), Riley (third, 13-3 1/2) and Moyle (fifth, 12-7 1/2).
Another pair of Duck women earned NCAA invites in the javelin.
Sophomore All-Americans Elisa Crumley and Roslyn Lundeen placed third (157-11) and fourth (157-3)- and improved on eighth and fifth-place pre-meet seedings.
"It wasn't pretty, but I did my best to fight through it," Crumley said. "I'm in nowhere near the shape I need to be, so I used a five-step approach. I know I can throw 160 feet off that by keeping it simple. Still, it's frustrating because I can't handle the speed and technique of a full approach, and it's only two weeks before nationals. There's been a lot of different stresses this year to deal with, so I have to stop putting too much pressure on myself. I just need to compete the best that I can."
Crumley improved from a 137-6 first throw to eventually launch two 157-foot efforts on her final two throws (157-11 and 157-6, respectively) that were within a foot of her season best of 157-11.
In contrast, Lundeen opened with a 151-4 effort, then followed with remaining preliminary marks of 157-3 and 156-1 , and another 154-1 effort on her fourth try, before a fifth attempt foul and pass on her six attempt.
"Realistically, the only good thing that happened today is that we qualified for nationals," Lundeen said. "I was disappointed by the marks today. Things are supposed to be clicking but they're not yet, and my elbow is still coming around. I haven't thrown in practice in two weeks, so I could feel my javelin tip all over the place - it's supposed to be at a 30 degree angle, and it was probably 70 or 80 degrees sometimes. That's not an excuse. Nationals are almost here, and I need to step up and not worry about it and just throw. Physically my strength and speed are there, I'm not just getting a clean pull on the javelin yet."
In other women's field event action, senior Mary Etter ranked 23rd overall in the shot put (44-8) in her 11th event appearance this season, while Cal Poly's Stephanie Brown won the event by more than 1 1/2 feet (56-9 1/4). The Everett, Wash., native Etter entered the meet seeded 12th with a season best of 49-2 1/4 from the Texas Relays., and scored for the straight season in the Pac-10 showdown two weeks ago with her sixth-place finish.
In distance action, senior Eri Macdonald missed making the 800 final by only .06 seconds with a third-place time of 2:08.28 in the second of the two prelims. Her time ranked third-fastest among her races in 2003, and was less than a second shy of her season best of 2:07.40 from the Pepsi Team Invite in April in Eugene. UCLA's Lena Nilsson ran Saturday's fastest time (2:04.79) in the first heat which proved much faster and featured all four time-qualifiers from that heat. Macdonald's race was won by BYU's Aneta Lemiesz (2:06.01) followed by California's Chloe Jarvis (second, 2:07.96).
Although she has a cross country and indoor season remaining, Macdonald wraps up her outdoor career ranked seventh in UO history with last year's personal best of 2:0637 from the Husky Dual. She was a four-time Pac-10 qualifier and three-time scorer while running off a stress fracture late in her junior season league race.
In the 1,500 redshirt redshirt sophomore Laura Harmon ranked 13th overall in the combined results from the two heats (4:34.81) and missed the 12th and final invite for Saturday's final by .82 seconds. UCLA's Lena Nilsson also sported the day's fastest time (4:24.48) just ahead of indoor mile champion and Swedish counterpart Johanna Nilsson (4:24.49). Harmon's time was her fifth of the season under the 4:35.00 mark, with her season best of 4:30.50 from the Oregon Twilight.
In the women's 5K, the Ducks featured a trio of entries - redshirt sophomore Magdalena Sandoval (11th, 16:45.91), redshirt senior Carrie Zografos (13th, 17:04.57) and freshman Nicole Feest (17th, 17:14.31) who were just shy of their season bests.
Also on the track, senior sprinter Janette Davis wrapped up her Duck career with a time of 55.00 seconds to finish fourth in the third of three preliminary heats and ranked 11th overall among the 16 entries. The Medford, Ore., native closed her career as a two-time Pac-10 scorer in the event after taking sixth in 2002 and '03, and stands fourth all-time in Duck history with her season and personal best of 53.87.
Redshirt junior Abby Andrus faced the fastest hurdles fields of her career and scored a windy best of 13.93 in the 100 hurdles (w:+2.6) to finish fifth in her heat and 14th overall among the 22 entries. The first-year Duck transfer owned a previous windy best of 13.99w (w:+2.8), while her wind-legal best of 14.00 came in the Oregon Invite heptathlon. Andrus returned in the evening to leg out a 60.22 effort in the 400 hurdles to finish third in her heat and rank 12th overall - only .43 seconds from the final time qualifier. Friday's time was her second-fastest of the season, and only .32 seconds shy of her season best from the Long Beach Invite (59.90).
"A lot of key people did what they needed to get to nationals," Oregon women's coach Tom Heinonen said. "We had four people get in today, to go along with Abby Andrus who's already in the heptathlon field. Becky was unbelievable in the pole vault, and some other good things happened. Also in the pole vault, Hannah had her best day against her toughest field, and Abby took advantage of a good field in the 100 hurdles with another best. Elisa really pulled off a strong finish, climbing up to third after a rough start, and Ros put up a decent mark early and hung around the mid 150s all day."
