Duck Wrestling Set for California Schools

DUCK WRESTLING TEAM SET FOR THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS
The Oregon wrestling team (1-5, 0-1) returns on the road for a busy weekend to compete Thursday in a dual meet against Pac-10 opponent Stanford at Burnham Pavillion at 7 p.m. The Ducks will wrestle Friday against UC Davis at Hickey Gym starting at 7p.m. Oregon will then stay and compete at the Aggie Open, hosted by UC Davis for an all day event on Saturday. Some teams in the open include No. 21 Cal State-Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Menlo College, Southern Oregon, and Fresno State.
Stanford (3-4, 0-1); UO leads all-time series, 29-2
Jan. 15 ? Stanford, Calif. ? Burnham Pavillion, 7 p.m.
Oregon will travel to Stanford to wrestle at 7 p.m. on Thurs. The Ducks have dominated the series, 29-2 up to this point. Stanford is coming off its first Pac-10 dual against Cal State-Bakersfield. The Roadrunners took the match 21-18. The Cardinal have two ranked wrestlers, both in Pac-10 rankings as well as Intermat Wrestling. Junior Matt Gentry is ranked 5th by Intermat and No. 1 in Pac-10 at 157. He leads Stanford with an overall record of 23-0 including six pins. Junior Brad Metzier is No. 12 by Intermat and No. 1 in Pac-10 at 141. Metzier has a record of 15-2 and has placed in two tournaments.
UC Davis (3-4, 1-1); Oregon leads all-time series, 8-0

UC Davis and Oregon will meet on Fri. Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. The Ducks have dominated the series, 8-0 since their first meeting in the 1980-81 season. The Aggies are coached by Lennie Zalesky. He has coached UC Davis to a 16-15 record over the three years as head coach. UC Davis is coming off its first loss in Pac-10 against No. 21-ranked Boise State. The Broncos defeated the Aggies, 21-12 on Jan. 9 at Hickey Gym. The first Pac-10 win came against Cal State-Fullerton back on Nov. 21, in a wide margin of 33-9, where the Aggies won eight of the ten matches. Freshman Derek Moore leads the Aggies, individually at 133 with an overall record of 14-5. Moore has placed at both tournaments the Aggies have wrestled in this season. He is currently fifth in the Pac-10 rankings. The Aggies have five other wrestlers in the rankings as well. Tommy Schurkamp is fifth at 125, Jeff Bristol is third at 141, Kevin Jones is fourth at 149, Mike Font is second at 165, and Brandon Bear is fourth at 184.
Aggie Open
Jan. 17 ? Davis, Calif. ? All Day
UC Davis will host the Aggie Open on Sat. Jan. 17 for an all day event. A few teams that will participate include No. 21 Cal State-Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Menlo College, Southern Oregon, and Fresno State.
STILL AT THE TOP
Senior Jason Harless continues to be ranked at No. 20. Oregon State was his first match this season. He defeated Tim Norman in a decision match 4-2. Harless had the closest match of the night against Oklahoma State’s No. 4 Johnny Thompson in a decision match. Thompson took the match, 5-2. Harless bounced back at the Reno Tournament of Champions winning three consecutive matches before falling to Mike Simpson of Arizona State, 2-1. He finished 3-2 with a sixth place victory. Harless has an overall record of 6-5 on the season.
HIGHEST RANK THIS SEASON
Sophomore Joey Bracamonte breaks into the rankings this week resting at No. 19 at 157. He started the season at 165, but moved down to 157 after the injury to freshman Scott Woods. Bracamonte carries a record of 5-2 at 157 and an overall record of 13-5, including a 5-1 pin record. Bracamote will look to improve his record with the big weekend ahead.
IN PAC-10 RANKINGS
The Ducks continue to have four wrestlers in the Pac-10 rankings. Luke Larwin is still in third at 165 behind Oregon State’s Matt Ellis and Mike Font of UC Davis. Larwin carries a 16-6 overall record going into this weekend’s duals. Jason Harless is third at 133 with an overall record of 6-5. Sophomore Joey Bracamonte stays in third at 157. Bracamonte carries an overall record of 13-5. Cody Parker is fifth at heavyweight with an overall record of 7-9.
THE LAST TIME VS. STANFORD
Stanford traveled to McArthur Court to face a then 2-0 undefeated Duck squad on Jan. 17, 2003. Oregon remained undefeated, while capturing a 32-6 win over the Cardinal. The Ducks took eight of the ten matches in the win.
THE LAST TIME VS. UC DAVIS
UC Davis was the second of two home matches at McArthur Court on Jan. 17, 2003. Oregon completed the Pac-10 sweep knocking off UC Davis, 28-9. The Ducks took seven of the ten matches in this dual, which improved their record to 4-0 in Pac-10 play and 5-4 overall.
UP NEXT FOR THE DUCKS
The Ducks will be home for the second time this season when they host two Pac-10 rivals. Oregon will face Fresno State on Friday Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. and Cal State-Bakersfield on Sunday Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. Both duals will be at McArthur Court.
