Wrestling Falls Short of Victory
STANFORD, Calif. ? The Oregon wrestling team falls short to Stanford, 31-6 at Burnham Pavillion. This marks the first lost to Stanford since 1995. Stanford improves to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in Pac-10. Oregon drops to 1-6, 0-2.
"We are a young team and when you have starters out of the lineup it makes those matches even that much more important to win and we didn’t get the job done," head coach Chuck Kearney said. "We lost five close matches that we were in and capable of winning."
Junior Luke Larwin records his fourth straight dual victory after a decision win over Brian Perry, 3-1. Larwin improves to 17-6 on the season. Senior Jake Leair was the only other Duck to record a victory in the dual. Leair defeated Ian Bork, 5-3 and captured his second dual win this season.
"We just need to focus on the task at hand and fight through things and wrestle with some confidence. We need to wrestle with the best attitude to win and if we do that the success will follow."
Freshman Elliott Tracy received his first start in his career as a Duck filling in for freshman Cyle Hartzell. Tracy fought hard before falling to Luis Vendrell in a decision match, 12-7. Johnny Lugo also saw some action on the mat, competing in his first dual this season. He was pinned by No. 12-ranked Brad Metzler during the first period of the match.
"The key for us now is to learn from this, bounce back and be ready to compete tomorrow."
The Ducks will try to capture their first Pac-10 victory when they wrestle UC Davis (3-4, 1-1) in Davis, Calif. Fri. night starting at 7 p.m. at Recreation Hall. Oregon leads the all-time series with the Aggies, 8-0 heading into the dual. The Ducks will stay in Davis for the Aggie Open hosted by UC Davis on Saturday for an all day event.
