Bieri and Swinnen Open Up Season With Victories at USTA Futures

KISSIMMEE, Fla. ? Junior Thomas Bieri began the season on a good note. The Switzerland native defeated Great Britain’s Thomas Gui 6-4, 7-5 in the qualifying round of the USTA Futures tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. Gui currently holds two ATP Tour points and was ranked among the top 1,200 players in the world.
"It was a good way to start the season for Thomas (Bieri)," head Coach Chris Russell said. "He has no world ranking, so a win like this is exactly what he and the team needed."
Fellow junior and Switzerland native Sven Swinnen also recorded his first victory of the season, defeating Nikolay Bharikov of Russia 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of qualifying.
Both players continue play tomorrow morning.
The remainder of the Duck team is participating in the Corvallis John and Phil’s Tournament at the Timber Hills Racket Club in Corvallis, Ore., Jan. 17-19.
