Men?s Tennis Closes Out Banner Day In Corvallis

CORVALLIS, Ore. ? The day began with a bang and ended with one as well for the Oregon men’s tennis team. After Thomas Bieri and Sven Swinnen posted victories earlier in the day at the USTA Futures in Kissimme, Fla., the remainder of the Duck squad was as equally impressive, going undefeated (9-0) at the Corvallis John and Phil’s Tournament in Corvallis, Ore.
Eugene native, and sophomore Arron Spencer received a bye in the first round and then defeated Scott Kennel (Univ. of Portland), 7-6, 6-0. Fellow sophomore and newly acquired transfer, Markus Schiller won by default in the first round and then beat Chris Valverde (Portland, Ore.) 6-3, 7-5.
Freshmen Eric Pickard and Vlad Pino were just as strong. Pickard defeated Ryan Nguyen (Salem, Ore.) 6-0, 6-2 in the first round and then won by default in the second round against Paul Kozak (Durham, NC). Pino, a native of Sweden, defeated Ian Meyer (Corvallis, Ore.) by an impressive score of 6-0, 6-0. He then defeated Jesse Schouten (Port Angeles, Wash.), 7-5, 6-3.
Rounding out the day was lone senior Chris King, who defeated Nick Baker (Corvallis, Ore.), 6-0, 6-2 in the first round. King then disposed of Jed Rembold (Linfield College), 6-0, 6-2 in the second round.
"It is good to get some matches under our belt," said head Coach Chris Russell. "Anytime you get a chance to play matches, you improve individually and as a team."
The Ducks continue action tomorrow in Corvallis and Kissimme, Fla.
