UC Davis Defeats Wrestling, 24-18
DAVIS, Calif. ? The Oregon wrestling team improves but is still trying to find its way to a Pac-10 victory. The Aggies of UC Davis defeat the Ducks, 24-18 in Davis, Calif. at Recreation Hall in front of 1,517 fans. UC Davis improves to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in Pac-10. Oregon falls to 1-7, 0-3.
"We wrestled better tonight," said head coach Chuck Kearney. "We still have a lot of things to work on. We are asking a lot of our wrestlers to wrestle out of weight class because they are just overmatched and oversized."
To start the dual, Aggies’ Mike Font snaps Luke Larwin’s winning streak at 165. Font defeated Larwin in a decision match, 11-7. Larwin leads the Ducks, individually with a record of 17-7 overall including eleven decisions, three pins, one major and 34 team points.
Senior Jake Leair gets his third dual win in a row at 197 after defeating Evan Hendrix, 10-8. Leair improves his record to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in duals.
Other wins included senior Jason Harless capturing a victory over Cesar Correa in a decision match, 6-1. Chet McBee won at 184 defeating Frank Richmond, 9-8. Freshman Cody Parker downs Michael Clarkston, 14-8 to give Oregon the lead 9-8 with five bouts to go in the dual. To finish the dual, Joey Bracamonte won by forfeit at 157, but it wasn’t enough for the Ducks to pull through to a victory.
UC Davis rebounded from an earlier loss Friday to No. 21-ranked Cal State-Bakersfield, 29-13. The Aggies had the lead early but the Roadrunners rebounded later in the matchs’ final four bouts to take the Pac-10 victory.
"We have a tournament tomorrow and are hoping to see some progress and the things we have worked on in practice show up during the meet."
Oregon will stay in Davis for the Aggie Open hosted by UC Davis on Saturday for an all day event. The Ducks will be home the following weekend when they host Fresno State on Fri. Jan. 23 at 7p.m. and Cal State-Bakersfield on Sun. Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. Both duals will be held at McArthur Court.
