Men?s Tennis Puts Two Into The Semifinals of John And Phil?s Tournament

CORVALLIS, Ore. ? The men’s squad endured another day of multiple matches with sophomores Arron Spencer and Markus Schiller winning their third round matches. Spencer defeated Eugene, Ore. native, Luke Rencher 6-1, 6-1. Schiller ousted Colby Jager (Univ. of Portland) 7-5, 7-6. Spencer then won his quarterfinal match against Tim Layman (Salem, Ore.), 6-1, 6-0. The sophomore transfer Schiller also won his quarterfinal match, beating No. 1 seed Brian Joelson (Portland, Ore.), 6-3, 7-6.
"Markus was kind of a wild card for us." said head Coach Chris Russell. "We really didn’t know what to expect, but are obviously quite pleased with his early season performance."
In other third round action, freshman Vlad Pino opened up the day with a loss to Beau Smith (Portland, Ore.) 2-6, 7-5, 7-6. Fellow freshman Eric Pickard was defeated by Roman Borvanov (Univ. of Portland), 6-3, 7-5. Senior Chris King was also beat by No. 2 seed Oren Montevassel (Los Angeles, Calif.), 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles play, King and Schiller won their first and second round match. They defeated Rucks (Bend, Ore.) and Schwerter (Bend, Ore.), 6-4, 6-4 in the second round to advance to the quarterfinals. Pickard and Spencer also won their first and second round matches to advance to the quarterfinals. Both squads will play their quarterfinal matches late Saturday night.
Both Schiller and Spencer will advance to the singles semifinals which begin Sunday morning.
The second day of the USTA’s in Kissimmee, Fla. resulted in two tough losses for juniors Thomas Bieri and Sven Swinnen. Despite the losses, the two performed quite well against top-flight competition and benefited from the experience.
"I am very pleased with the way the boys (Bieri and Swinnen) performed," said Russell. They were in every match and got a chance to play very tough competition."
Bieri was the hard luck loser of a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 match against ex-Univ. of Alabama player Michael Pallares of Leonia, NJ. Swinnen played Julie Cassaigne of France tough, losing 7-5, 6-3. Cassaigne was ranked among the top 500 players in the world.
